Turks and Caicos Islands ( and ), or TCI for short, is the British Foreign Territory consisting of larger Caicos Islands and smaller Turks Islands , two groups of tropical islands in the Lucayan Islands in the Atlantic Ocean and northern West Indies. They are known primarily for tourism and as offshore financial centers. The population is 31,458 in 2012 of which 23,769 live in Providenciales in the Caicos Islands.

The Turks and Caicos Islands lie to the southeast of Mayaguana on the Bahamas chain of islands and to the north of the island of Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic) and other islands of the Antilles archipelago. Cockburn Town, the capital since 1766, is located on Grand Turk Island about 1,042 kilometers (647 mi) east-southeast of Miami, USA. The islands have a total land area of 430 square kilometers (170 m²).

The first recorded European invention of the islands now known as Turks and Caicos occurred in 1512. In the following centuries, the islands were claimed by some European powers with the British Empire finally gaining control. Over the years the islands are governed indirectly through Bermuda, the Bahamas, and Jamaica. When the Bahamas gained independence in 1973, the islands received their own governorship, and remained autonomous autonomous regions of Britain ever since.

History

The first inhabitants of the islands were Taecos who were Arawakan language, who crossed from Hispaniola around 500 to 800 AD Together with Taino who migrated from Cuba to the southern Bahamas at the same time, these people developed as Lucayan. About 1200, the Turks and Caicos Islands were resettled by the Classic Taos from Hispaniola.

Immediately after Spain arrived in the islands in 1512, they began to capture the TaÃÆ'no Islands of Turks and Caicos and Lucayan as slaves (technically, as workers in the system of encomienda) to replace the very poor native population of Hispaniola. The southern Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands are completely inhabited around 1513, and remain so until the 17th century.

The first documented European to see the islands was the Spanish conqueror Juan Ponce de LeÃÆ'³n, who did so in 1512. During the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, the islands moved from Spain, to France, to British control, but none of the three forces ever established any settlement.

Settlement

The salt collectors then settled in the Turks Islands around 1680. For decades around the turn of the 18th century, the islands became a popular pirate hideout. From 1765-1783, the islands were under French occupation, and again after France seized the archipelago in 1783.

After the American War of Independence (1775-1783), many Loyalists fled to the British Caribbean colonies; in 1783, they were the first settlers of the Caicos Islands. They developed cotton as an important cash crop, but were replaced by the development of the salt industry.

In 1799, Turks and Caicos island groups were annexed by the British as part of the Bahamas. Sea salt processing was developed as a very important export product of the West Indies, with work done by African slaves. Salt continues to be a major export product to the nineteenth century.

In 1807, the British forbade slave trade and, in 1833, abolished slavery in its colonies. British ships sometimes intercept slave traders in the Caribbean, and some ships crumble off the coast of these islands. In 1837, Esperanza, a Portuguese boy, was destroyed in East Caicos, one of the larger islands. While the crew and 220 Africans were captured safely from the wreckage, 18 Africans died before the survivors were brought to Nassau. The Africans of this ship may be among the 189 freed Africans, who by British colonists settled in Turks and Caicos from 1833 to 1840.

In 1841, Trouvadore , an illegal Spanish slave ship, was destroyed on the coast of East Caicos. All 20 crew members and 192 African prisoners survived the sinking of the ship. Officers liberated Africans and arranged for 168 people to be flanked by island owners on Grand Turk Island for one year. They increase the population of small colonies up to seven percent. Many descendants came from the free Africans. The remaining 24 resettled in Nassau. The Spanish crew was also taken there, to be handed over to Cuban consulates and taken to Cuba for prosecution. A 1878 letter documents "Trouvadore Africa" and their offspring as an important part of the "working population" on the islands.

In 2004, marine archaeologists affiliated with the National Museum of Turks and Caicos discovered a shipwreck, called the "Black Stone Vessel," which, according to subsequent research, is probably from Trouvadore. In November 2008, a cooperative marine archaeological expedition, funded by the NOAA United States, confirmed that shipwrecks have stylish artifacts and date of manufacture linking them to Trouvadore .

Political reorganization

In 1848, the British established Turkey and Caicos as separate colonies under the presidency of the council. In 1873, the islands became part of the Jamaican colony; in 1894, the principal colonial official was the commissioner fixed. In 1917, Canadian Prime Minister Robert Borden suggested that Turkey and Caicos join Canada, but this advice was rejected by British Prime Minister David Lloyd George. The islands remain a Jamaican dependency.

On July 4, 1959, the islands were again designated as separate colonies, the last commissioner was an administrator. The Jamaican governor also continues as governor of the islands. When Jamaica was granted independence from Britain in August 1962, the Turks and Caicos Islands became the Crown colony. Beginning in 1965, the governor of Bahamas was also governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands and oversaw the affairs of the islands.

When the Bahamas gained independence in 1973, the Turkic and Caicos received their own governor (the last administrator fixed). In 1974, Canadian New Democrat MP Max Saltsman sought to use his Private Member bill for legislation to annex the archipelago to Canada, but did not pass the House of Commons of Canada.

Since August 1976, the islands have self-rule led by a prime minister (now prime minister), the first being James Alexander George Smith McCartney.

The archipelagic political problems of the early 21st century resulted in a rewritable constitution announced in 2006. In 2009, after Prime Minister Michael Misick resigned in the face of corruption allegations, the British took over direct control of the government. The new constitution was announced in October 2012 and the government returned to local government after the November 2012 election.

In the 2016 elections, Progressive National Rufus Ewing (PNP) loses for the first time since they replaced the reign of Derek Hugh Taylor in 2003. People's Democracy Movement (PDM) was in power with Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson as Prime Minister.

N 71Ã, Â ° 35? W . This region is geographically adjacent to the Bahamas, both of which comprise the Lucayan Islands, but are politically separate entities. The Caicos Islands are separated by parts of Caicos from nearby Bahamas, Mayaguana and Great Inagua.

The eight main islands and more than 299 smaller islands have a total area of 616.3 square kilometers (238.0 square miles), consisting mainly of low, flat limestone with extensive swamps and mangrove swamps and 332 square kilometers (128 m²) from the beach. The weather is usually sunny (it is generally assumed that the islands receive 350 sun days each year) and are relatively dry, but often experience storms. The islands have limited natural freshwater resources; Private water tanks collect rain water for drinking. The primary natural resources are spiny lobster, snails, and other shellfish.

Two different island groups are separated by the Turks of the Turks Islands.

Turks Islands

The Turks Islands are separated from the Caicos Islands by Turks Island Passage, which has a depth of over 2,200 m (7,200 ft). The islands form a chain that runs north-south. The Census 2012 population is 4,939 in two main islands, the only uninhabited island in the group: Grand Turk Island (with its capital of territory, area of 17.39 km <2>/) (6,71 sqà mi, population 4,831)

  • Salt Cay (area 6.74 km 2 (2.65 sq mi, mi), population 108)
  • Together with nearby islands, all on the Turks Bank, the two main islands make up two administrative districts in the region (out of a total of six regions) that crashed in the Turks Islands. Turks Bank, which is smaller than Caicos Bank, has a total area of approximately 324 km 2 (125Ã, sqÃ, mi).

    Mouchoir Bank

25 kilometers (16 miles) east of the Turks Islands and separated from them by Mouchoir Passage is Mouchoir Bank. Despite not having a bay or small island popping up, some parts are very shallow and water breaks them down. Mouchoir Bank is part of the Turks and Caicos Islands and is included in its Exclusive Economic Zone. It measures 960 square kilometers (370 m² mi) in the area. Two more banks to the east, the Silver Bank and Bank of Navidad, are geographically a continuation, but belong to politics to the Dominican Republic.

    Caicos Islands

The largest island in the Caicos archipelago is the sparsely populated Middle Caicos, covering 144 square kilometers (56 m²), but has a population of only 168 on the Census 2012. The most populous island is Providenciales, with 23,769 residents by 2012, and an area of 122 kilometers square (47 m²). North Caicos (116 square kilometers in the area) has 1,312 inhabitants. South Caicos (21 square kilometers (8.1 m²) in the area) has 1,139 inhabitants, and Parrot Cay (6 square kilometers (2.3 m²) in the area) has 131 residents. East Caicos (which is managed as part of the South Caicos District) is uninhabited, while the only permanent residents in West Caicos (managed as part of the Providenciales District) are resort staff.

    Populasi

    Demografi

Eight of the thirty islands in the region are inhabited, with a total population estimated from the preliminary results of the January 25, 2012 census (released on August 12, 2012) of 31,458 residents, an increase of 58.2% of the 19,886 population reported in the 2001 Census. under 15 years, and only 4% are 65 years of age or older. In 2000 the population grew at a rate of 3.55% per year. The infant mortality rate was 18.66 deaths per 1,000 live births and life expectancy at birth was 73.28 years (71.15 years for men, 75.51 years for women). Total fertility rate is 3.25 children born per woman. The annual population growth rate is 2.82%.

The adult population comprises 57.5% of immigrants. CIA World Factbook describes ethnic population as Africa 87%, Europe 7.9%, Mixed 2.5%, East India 1.3% and Others 0.7%

    Vital Statistics

Important statistics related to the population are:

    Population breakdown

    Language

The official language of the islands is English and its residents also talk about Turks and Caicos Creole Islands similar to Bahamas Creole. Due to its proximity to Cuba and Hispaniola, the large Haitian community and Spanish-speaking community have flourished in the region due to immigration, both legal and illegal, from Creole-speaking Haiti and from Cuban and Spanish Dominican Republic.

    Religion

72.8% of Turks and Caicos populations are Christian (Baptist 35.8%, Church of God 11.7%, Roman Catholic 11.4%, Anglican 10%, Methodist 9.3%, Seventh Day Adventist 6%, Witnesses Jehovah 1.8% and Others 14%).

Catholics are served by the "Sui Iuris" Mission for Turks and Caicos, established in 1984 with territories taken from the Diocese of Nassau.

    Culture

The Turks and Caicos Islands are famous for its ripsaw music. The islands are known for their annual Festival of Music and Cultures featuring many local talents and other dynamic performances by many music celebrities from across the Caribbean and the United States.

Women continue traditional crafts using straw to make baskets and hats on the larger Caicos archipelago. It is possible that this sustainable tradition is linked to liberated Africans who joined the immediate population of Africa in the 1830s and 1841s of the shipwrecked slaves; they bring their cultural craft skills with them.

The island's most popular sports are fishing, sailing, football (soccer) and cricket (which is a national sport).

Turks and Caicos cuisine is mainly based on seafood, especially snails. Two common dishes, while not traditional 'local', are conch fritters and shellfish salad.

    Citizenship

Because Turks and Caicos are British Foreign Territories and not independent states, they can, at one time, not grant citizenship. On the contrary, people who have close links with Britain's Outer Territories all have the same nationality: British Foreign Citizens (BOTC) as defined by the British Citizenship Act of 1981 and subsequent amendments. BOTC, however, does not grant the right to live in any UK Foreign Territory, including the territories from which it originated. Conversely, the rights normally associated with citizenship come from the so-called Belonger status and the indigenous islanders or descendants of the natives are said to be Belongers.

In 2002, the British Overseas Territories Act restored British citizenship to all British Overseas Territories, including Turks and Caicos.

    Education system

Public Education is supported by taxation, and is mandatory for children aged five to sixteen. Basic education lasts for six years and secondary education lasts for five years. In the 1990s, the island nation launched the Teacher Education In Primary Work Project (PINSTEP) in an effort to improve the skills of primary school teachers, nearly one-quarter of them ineligible. Turks and Caicos also work to restore their elementary schools, reduce the cost of textbooks, and improve supplies and supplies provided to schools. For example, in September 1993, every elementary school was given enough books to enable teachers to build libraries in their classrooms. In 2001, the ratio of student-teacher at the elementary level was approximately 15: 1. The Turks and Caicos Islands Community College offers free higher education to students who have successfully completed their secondary education. Community colleges also oversee adult literacy programs. The Ministry of Health, Education, Youth, Sports, and Women Affairs oversees education in Turks and Caicos. After students complete their education at Turks and Caicos Islands Community College, they are allowed to continue their studies at universities in the United States, Canada, or the United Kingdom for free. They must commit to working in the Turks and Caicos Islands for four years to receive this extra education.

There is a campus of West Indies Open University in the area.

    Health system

Turks and Caicos established the National Health System in 2010. Residents contribute to the National Health Insurance Plan through salary deductions and nominal user fees. The majority of care is provided by private-public-partnership hospitals in Providenciales and Grand Turk. In addition there are a number of government clinics and private clinics. The hospital opened in 2010 is managed by Interhealth Canada and accredited by Canadian Accreditation in 2012 and 2015.

    Economy

The salt industry, together with the export of sponges and small flax, retained the Turks and Caicos Islands (only slightly, however, there was little population growth and stagnant economy) until in the 1960s American investors arrived on the islands and funded the construction of an airstrip in Provo Island and built the first hotel in this archipelago, "The Third Turtle". Small drops of tourists began to arrive, supplementing the salt economy. Club Med set up a resort in Grace Bay soon after. In the 1980s, Club Med funded an increase in airstrips to allow for larger aircraft, and since then, tourism has gradually increased. It is common for foreign couples to get married in the Turks and Caicos Islands today.

In 2009, the contribution of GDP was as follows: Hotels & amp; Restaurants 34.67%, Financial Services 13.12%, Construction 7.83%, Transportation, Storage & amp; Communications 9.90%, and Real Estate, Renting & amp; Business Activities 9.56%. Most of the capital goods and food for domestic consumption are imported.

In 2010/2011, the main sources of government revenue included Import Duty (43.31%), Stamp Duty on Land Transactions (8.82%), Work Permits and Residential Costs (10.03%) and Accommodation Tax (24.95 %). The region's gross domestic product at the end of 2009 was about US $ 795 million (per capita $ 24,273).

The labor force totaled 27,595 workers in 2008. The distribution of labor in 2006 is as follows:

The unemployment rate in 2008 was 8.3%. In 2007-2008, the region took revenues of $ 206.79 million against expenditures of $ 235.85 million. In 1995, the island received $ 5.7 million in economic aid. The region's currency is the United States dollar, with some government fines (such as airport offenses) paid in pounds sterling. Most of the issues of warning coins are in the form of a crown.

The main agricultural products include small quantities of corn, beans, cassava (tapioca) and citrus fruits. Fish and conch are the only significant exports, with lobsters of $ 169.2 million, dried and fresh snails, and conch shells exported in 2000, mainly to Britain and the United States. However, in recent years, catches have declined. This region was once an important trans-shipping point for South American narcotics aimed at the United States, but due to the ongoing pressure from the combined efforts of America, the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos, this trade has been greatly reduced.

The islands import food and beverages, tobacco, clothing, manufacture and construction materials, mainly from the United States and Britain. Imports totaled $ 581 million in 2007.

The islands produce and consume about 5 GWh of electricity, per year, which all come from fossil fuels.

    Tourism

The United States was a major source of tourists in 1996, accounting for over half of the 87,000 visitors; another major source of tourists is Canada. Tourist arrivals increased to 264,887 in 2007 and to 351,498 in 2009. In 2010, a total of 245 cruise ships arrived at Grand Turk Cruise Terminal, bringing a total of 617,863 visitors.

The government is pursuing a two-pronged strategy to boost tourism. This high-end resort is aimed at the wealthy, while a large new yacht harbor and recreation center have been built for people visiting Grand Turk. The Turks and Caicos Islands have one of the world's longest coral reefs and the only shellfish farm in the world.

The French holiday village company Club Mediterannee (Club Med) has a fully equipped adult resort called 'Turkoise' on one of the main islands.

Some Hollywood stars have built houses in Turks and Caicos, including Dick Clark and Bruce Willis. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner were married at Parrot Cay in 2005. Actress Eva Longoria and her ex-husband Tony Parker went to the islands for their honeymoon in July 2007 and High School Musical actor Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens went for a vacation there. In 2013 Hollywood writer/director Rob Margolies and Christian actress Ruhlin are vacationing here. Musician Nile Rodgers has a holiday home on the island.

To boost tourism during the low season of the Caribbean in late summer, since 2003 the Turks and Caicos Tourism Board has organized and organized a series of annual concerts during this season called Turkey & Caicos Music and Cultural Festival. Held in a temporary band at The Turtle Cove Marina at The Bight on Providenciales, the festival lasts about a week and has featured several internationally renowned recording artists such as Lionel Richie, LL Cool J, Anita Baker, Billy Ocean, Alicia Keys, John Legenda, Kenny Rogers, Michael Bolton, Ludacris, Chaka Khan, and Boyz II Men. More than 10,000 people attend every year.

    Biodiversity

The Turks and Caicos Islands are biodiversity hotspots. These islands have many endemic species and others that have international importance, due to the conditions created by the development of the oldest salt-pan in the Caribbean. Various species include a number of endemic lizard species, snakes, insects and plants, and marine organisms; besides being an important breeding area for seabirds.

The Government of the United Kingdom and the Turks and Caicos Islands have a shared responsibility for conservation and preservation to fulfill obligations under international environmental conventions.

Due to this significance, these islands are on the tentative list of the United Kingdom for a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the future.

    Transportation

Providenciales International Airport is the main entry point for the Turks and Caicos Islands. Overall, there are seven airports, located on each island inhabited. Five have been paved runways (three of which are about 2,000 m (6,600 ft) long and one about 1,000 m (3,300 ft) long), and the remaining two have unpaved runways (one of which is about 1,000 m (3,300 ft) and which others are significantly shorter).

The archipelago has 121 kilometers (75 miles) of highway, 24 km (15 miles) paved and 97 km (60 mi) unpaved. Like the US Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands, the Turks and Caicos Islands drove to the left, but using left-handed vehicles imported from the United States.

The major international ports and ports of the region are on the Grand Turk and Providenciales Islands.

The islands have no significant railway lines. At the beginning of the 20th century, East Caicos operated a horse-drawn carriage to transport Sisal from the plantation to the harbor. The route 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) was removed after the sisal trade stopped.
