Bard College Early University ( BHSEC ) is an alternative public high school model. The original campus, Initial College of Manhattan Bard College , opened in New York City in 2001. As a partnership between Bard College and various local public school systems, the BHSEC model enables highly motivated and scholastically strong students to start study their college two years early, graduating with a Bard College Associate in Arts degree in addition to their high school diploma. The students complete their high school lessons in grades nine and ten, after which they begin taking a credit education course under one roof. Unlike some double enrollment programs, students stay on the same campus for all four years, and both secondary and college level courses are taught by the same faculty. Teachers at Bard High School Early Schools are both certified public school teachers and experienced academics, often holding terminal titles in their field of study.
Currently, there are six campuses of Bard College's Higher Colleges across the country: BHSEC Manhattan , opened in 2001, located in Lower East Side, Manhattan; BHSEC Queens , which opened in 2008, is located in Long Island City; BHSEC Newark , which opened in 2011, is located in Newark, New Jersey; BHSEC Cleveland and BHSEC Cleveland East , which opened in 2014 and 2017, are each located in Cleveland, Ohio; and Baltimore BHSEC , opened in 2015, located in Baltimore, Maryland.
Higher Colleges Bard College is part of a larger network of early college programs at Bard College, called Bard Early Colleges, which also includes a half-day program in New Orleans, Louisiana; partnered with Harlem Children's Zone in New York City; and in Hudson, New York.

Histori
Founded in 2001 as a partnership of the New York City Department of Education and Bard College and funded in part by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Bard High School Early Manhattan College was the first public Bard Early College. However, the early college model and many teaching philosophies used in Early Bard College were mainly developed at Bard College at Simon's Rock, the oldest and most highly regarded college admission program and the only four-year college accredited to date.
BHSEC Manhattan is the first school at the Gates Foundation's Early College High School Initiative, which aims to improve education in the United States by introducing a smaller public high school that helps remove barriers to college education by offering students a college education in high school settings.
Starting June 2016, over 2,500 A.A. degree has been awarded at all BHSEC campuses. The schools boast 98% graduation rates and 95% of A.A. degree of degree achievement. Many BHSEC graduates transfer their 60 college credits to other colleges or universities and complete their Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in two more years; others choose to study for three or four years at their next institution. According to National Student Clearinghouse, six years of B.A. the level of achievement for the 2005-2009 class was 98%.

In the BHSEC program, students spend what is traditionally the ninth and tenth grade that completes most of their high school work. Students are encouraged to take all necessary state tests by the end of grade 10, when possible - in New York City, students take the five Regent exams required for the Regents High School diploma, which they receive in addition to the Associates of Arts degree from Bard College. Unlike most high schools, BHSEC does not offer tailor-made courses to prepare students for state tests, nor is an Advanced Placement (AP) program or International Baccalaureate (IB) offered (as the last two years have been spent in lecture accreditation courses). To complete a secondary school curriculum in two years, the course is taught at an accelerated pace.
BHSEC does not rank its students and does not honor titles like Valedictorian, nor does it apply the Deans list.
Early Course (11th & 12th grade)
Two years spent in the college program are notated "Year 1" and "Year 2." As a college program, students can choose their courses based primarily on their academic interests and preferences for particular professors; However, they also must meet the core requirements of the college program. This requirement includes four semesters of Bard Seminars, where students read and discuss seminal works of western thought, from Plato and classics through Shakespeare and end in postmodernism. Students are also required to complete two semesters of mathematics, two semesters of laboratory science, one semester of the course of US history, one semester of the course of world history, two literary semesters, and two semesters of foreign language (at least one in the intermediate level) and three art credits. Students may also create their own programs with independent study programs, provided that faculty members have knowledge in the subject, awarding 1 to 3 credits, depending on the number of college level readings completed. Every semester, a student must take 14-18 credits. With permission from the dean, students may take more than 18 credits in one semester. Students may also transfer credits from other universities to meet their requirements for a college program.
The BHSEC course offers more specialized classes than high school programs, such as Linear Algebra, Reason and Politics, Novel Dostoyevsky, Philosophy of Religion, Sound and Music Physics, Social Contracts and Criticism, Criminal Laws through Literature, and Culture and Food History. These courses are taught by college professors, many of whom have published books and articles in their fields. Across the campus, the lecture offer is based on the interests and expertise of faculty members.
Reception
All Bard High School Early Colleges are free public high schools. Each campus has its own admissions practice, but all use open writing assessment and in-person interview . Acceptance guidelines for each campus can be found on the school's website. Test preparation for assessment is also not available.
Writing & amp; Thinking Workshop
At all campuses and Bard College programs, the school year begins with a week-long Writing and Thinking Workshop. Students spend every day engaged in reading, writing, and critical thinking exercises, used in class throughout the school year. This is an opportunity to introduce new students and familiarize students today with the BHSEC academic environment.
In various disciplines, teaching at Bard Early Colleges uses a practice developed at the Bard Institute for Writing and Thinking to advance the philosophy that "Writing is a complete record of thought and exploratory processes that support interdisciplinary teaching and learning.At all levels of writing allows authors to find out what he wants to say. "Their students and teachers write together using classroom exercises and teaching methods to respond to texts that reflect the diverse genres, sounds and perspectives. This written dialogue then becomes the basis for class discussions.

Faculty
The majority of BHSEC faculty members in the school hold a PhD and all faculty have a master's degree or higher. Faculty often choose to teach courses in their current field of scientific research. A full list of faculty is available on the website of each school.
BHSEC is known for having close student-faculty relationships and small student-faculty ratios.

In 2009, President Barack Obama chose BHSEC as a model for the future in his Centennial Speech for the NAACP:
We must also explore the innovative approach being pursued here in New York City; innovations such as Bard High School Early College and Medgar Evers College Preparatory School that challenge students to finish high school and earn college degrees or free college degrees in just four years.
