Histori
Kempsville was originally named Kempe's Landing , then called Kemp's Landing . It is a colonial port in the head of the East Branch of the River Elizabeth. [1]
Kemp's Landing is set to half a hectare sold at a public auction after being advertised in the Virginia Gazette. The buyer held many things to be built within three years of a house of at least 20 square feet with a brick chimney. [2]
Tugboats and sailboats (often two rovered cruisers) often come to Kempsville. A large tug bridge crosses the Eastern Branch of the Elizabeth River where the much smaller Princess Anne Road bridge now crosses the river. [3]
Kempsville is the delivery point for most of Princess Anne County's products. The district is a very large producer of corn and wheat. Several large warehouses lined the banks of the river which are then much wider than today. A large number of "knees" are oak and all types of wood are shipped from Kempsville to Norfolk Navy Yard. [4]
Until 1861 Kempsville was a pretty busy place. It has a tobacco storehouse and an inspector whose salary is £ 35 a year. Warehouse receipts are used as currency. [5]
However, the growth of tobacco made little progress on sandy soil in Princess Anne County. [6]
A canal company was established to connect the upper reaches of the East River to the Elizabeth River with the Lynnhaven River upstream. The Commonwealth of Virginia government bought part of the supplies of the canal companies, but the Civil War ended the excavation of the canal and never finished. [7]
From 1762 to 1770, George Logan, a Scot, was Princess Anne County's High Sheriff. From 1772 to 1775, George Logan was one of the Anne County Princess Judges. During the Revolution, George Logan was a Loyalist. [8]
On November 14 or 15, 1775, John Ackiss, son of a former member of Virginia House of Burgesses and six others was killed by Virginia Colonist Lord Lord Dunmore in England during the "Battle of Kempe's Landing." These seven were the victims of the first American Revolutionary War in Virginia. In 1929, the American Revolutionary Daughter established a "Skirmish of Kempsville" plaque near the site.
On November 16, 1775, Lord Dunmore entered Kempsville in victory. Dunmore arrested the Colonial Commander then set up his base at Logan's house. Those who swore allegiance to King George III wore a red badge on their chests. [9]
After 16 November 1775 Kempsville Battle, George Logan entertains Lord Dunmore at his home. This house is the home of Dr. R. E. Whitehead. [10]
In 1778, the Princess Anne County Courthouse was transferred to Kemp's Landing from New Town. From 1778-1824, Kempsville was the location of the county seat of Princess Anne County. [11]
On August 13, 1779, nine African slaves were sold at a public auction in Kempsville. They have been taken by Continental frigates Boston and Deane then transported to private companies. [12]
Also on August 13, 1779, a British war lifter "Mermaid," was sold at a public auction in Kempsville on the orders of the Admiralty Court held at Hampton. [13]
On May 5, 1783, the city of Kempsville was founded in Princess Anne County, Virginia. [14]
On September 5, 1814, during the War of 1812, Anne County Women's Court ordered her records to be transferred to a safe place in North Carolina. On March 6, 1815, the Court ordered officers to take notes from North Carolina. On July 28, 1815, the Court allocated money for six people to take notes. [15]
In 1824, the county seat of Princess Anne County moved to its current location in Princess Anne, Virginia. [16]
In July 1843 the Emperor's Episcopal Church was completed on the ground donated by David Walke. On 27 November 1843, Senior Pastor William Meade offered the Emmanuel Episcopal Church building. [17]
The outer walls of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church are original. Graves in the churchyard include the nine veteran tombs of both the American Confederate States and the United States Army that fought in the American Civil War. It also contains the latest grave of Allen Jones "Al" "Two Gun" Gettel, a local boy who made his first pitch on a soccer field now preserved as Kempes Landing Park, which grew into a major league pitcher for the New York Yankees, Indian Cleveland, and Chicago White Sox for 10 years career (1945-55). [18]
The Princess Anne Academy is located in an old jail in Kempsville. The Academy closed in 1850. Ancestors from many of Norfolk's leading families and Princess Anne County attended the Academy. For example, in December 1835 then again in 1838, the principal trustee of the Academy, Mr. Rogers, advertised in Norfolk and Portsmouth Herald for a teacher for 1836 then 1839 Latin, Greek, English, and Mathematics, including the elements of Euclid if obliged. [19]
In 1850 a number of prominent residents in Kempsville advocated a highway from Norfolk to Kempsville. However, the road was not built until 1871 or 1872. [20]
After the Reconstruction, during the election, several African Americans were killed and many were injured in the riots. A number of European Americans were brought to justice but none came from this process. [21]
In 1897, a shop that had been erected in the former court of the House Court was destroyed by fire. [22]
In 1922, the former Courthouse and prison were still in use. The former Court House was renovated in 1902. [23]
In 1922 Kempsville was a "beautiful little village" with two churches, several general merchandise stores, and a modern brick school building. This agricultural community has a very fertile land that mainly grows potatoes, cotton, corn, and many truck plants. [24]
In 1963, when Virginia Beach's "new" township was created from the incorporation of a small resort town in Virginia Beach and Princess Anne County, Kempsville became a new city area.
Kempsville grew in populations during explosive economic growth in the 1960s and 1970s. Kempsville turned into the largest suburban community in Virginia's largest independent city.
Many important historical buildings in Kempsville were removed or torn down during this transformation. Only two buildings remain from the period of the Revolutionary War, including 1734 Carraway House on South Witchduck Road. [25] and 1769 Pleasant Hall. [26]

Road Construction Project
A major road construction project was completed with the involvement of Princess Anne, Kempsville Rd, and Witchduck Rd. The Witchduck Road section and the intersection is one of Virginia Beach's busiest corridors.
Kempsville Rd./Witchduck Rd. has been widened to 3 lanes in each direction (north and south) with new intersections of Princess Anne Rd, Kempsville Road and Witchduck Rd. Widened road extends from the Interstate 264 overpass on Witchduck Rd. south to Kempsville Rd/Princess Anne Intersection in the heart of the Kempsville Community.
Now that the road project is completed, the historic Kempsville Retail District is expected to be built in the area around this intersection that features colonial architecture with retail spending. Plans for the retail district were envisaged before the recent economic downturn, so much of the proposed new development in the area may take longer to achieve results than previously conceived.
At the southeastern corner of the new intersection, the construction of the Kempes Landing recreation park has been completed with a small lake, walking path and a large gazebo resembling that of Montpelier Estate in James and Dolley Madison located in Orange, Virginia. Although the development of the park is completed, currently public access is very limited to the property due to the ongoing development of almost.
