Sunset Beach is a coastal community of Huntington Beach, California in Orange County. Founded on September 8, 1904 and developed as a result of the 1920 oil discovery at Huntington Beach Oil Field. The census-designated spot of Sunset Beach and its 971 population at the 2010 census were annexed by Huntington Beach in 2011. Sunset Beach was founded in 1905 and developed as a result of oil discovery in 1920 at Huntington Beach Oil Field. On August 2, 2010, the Huntington Beach city council, with a 5-2 vote, voted to induct Sunset Beach to make the community part of a much larger Huntington Beach. The annexation officially began in January 2011 but a group of citizens filed a lawsuit on December 9, 2010 to stop annexation because of the new taxes that will be levied on them once they become part of Huntington Beach. A trial for an initial court order is scheduled on January 19, 2011 in Orange County High Court. Huntington Beach officially annexed Sunset Beach in August 2011.

Geography

According to the US Census Bureau, CDP covers an area of ​​0.2 square miles (0.5 km²), 97.51% of it, and 2.49% water.

Demographics

The 2010 US Census reported that Sunset Beach had a population of 971. Population density was 4,919.3 persons per square mile (1,899.4/km²). The racial makeup of Sunset Beach is 863 (88.9%) White, 4 (0.4%) African American, 6 (0.6%) Native Americans, 42 (4.3%) Asia, 2 (0.2 %) Pacific Islands, 18 (1.9%) of other races, and 36 (3.7%) of two or more races. Hispanic or Latin of any race is 79 people (8.1%).

The Census reported that 971 people (100% of the population) live in households, 0 (0%) live in unembienced groups, and 0 (0%) are institutionalized.

There are 515 households, of which 69 (13.4%) have children under the age of 18 living in them, 179 (34.8%) are married couples living together, 19 (3.7%) has a husbandless female household now, 23 (4.5%) have a householder male in the absence of a wife. There are 29 (5.6%) unmarried partners of the opposite sex, and 5 (1.0%) married couples or couples of the same sex. 224 households (43.5%) were made up of individuals and 48 (9.3%) had someone living alone 65 or older. The average household size was 1.89. There are 221 families (42.9% of all households); the average family size is 2.64.

The population was spread with 106 people (10.9%) under the age of 18, 72 people (7.4%) aged 18 to 24, 280 people (28.8%) aged 25 to 44, 365 people (37.6% aged 45 to 64 years, and 148 persons (15.2%) aged 65 years or older. The median age was 46.9 years. For every 100 women, there are 120.2 men. For every 100 women age 18 and over, there are 117.3 men.

There are 641 units of homes with an average density of 3,247.5 per square mile (1,253.8/km²), of which 211 (41.0%) are owner-occupied, and 304 (59.0%) are occupied by tenants. Homeowner vacancy rate is 4.4%; rental vacancy rate is 8.9%. 455 people (46.9% of the population) live in housing units occupied by owners and 516 people (53.1%) live in rental housing units.

Economy

Art and culture

Sunset Beach Art Festival is held annually during Mother's Day weekend. It was created in 1948 by local women's groups as a way to promote education and social activities and was originally called Carnival Beachcomber. The festival earns $ 30,000 to $ 40,000, with all proceeds going to charity.

Parks and recreation

Sunset Beach has one of the largest beaches in southern California. Walking parallel to the beach, from the north of the city to the south end is the Green Belt, a 14 acre land park where residents walk their dogs and celebrate Mother's Day with the historic Sunset Beach Art Festival, sponsored by Las Damas. Southeast of Sunset Beach is Bolsa Chica State Beach. Infrastructure

Sunset Beach has no residential mail delivery. Instead, residents take their mail in post office boxes at post offices located in the center or in private office mailboxes located on 22nd Street. The main Post Office features award-winning wall murals designed and painted by local artist Katy Brack. Sunset Beach is served by Sunset Beach Sanitary District and emergencys service provided by Huntington Beach Police Department and Huntington Beach Fire Department.
