Histori
The modern area of ââthe Gold Coast traces its roots for thousands of years of prehistory when Kumeyaay settled in the area. The first European explorers to arrive in the area were Iberian sailors, the first being Juan RodrÃÆ'guez Cabrillo in 1542, who traveled on the coastline. Under orders from the Viceroy of Mexico City, in 1602 SebastiÃÆ'án VizcaÃÆ'no charted Californias beach in detail looking for a natural harbor for a Spanish galleon.
This region is part of an area that used to belong to the Spanish Empire and is under the jurisdiction of the Californias Province. Californias was divided when Mexico won its independence from Spain to Alta California and Baja California. After the Mexican-American War, Californias became politically separated when California became a United States territory.
