Dennis Carl Wilson (December 4, 1944 - December 28, 1983) is an American musician, singer and songwriter who co-founded the Beach Boys. He is best remembered as their drummer and as the middle brother of the bandmates Brian and Carl Wilson. Dennis is the only true surfer in Beach Boys, and his personal life exemplifies "California Myth" that the band's early songs are often celebrated. He is also known for his short relationship with Charles Manson's past songwriter, who was later convicted of multiple murders.

Dennis serves primarily on drums and backing vocals for Beach Boys, and contrary to popular belief, his game can be heard in many group hits. He originally had some vocals on the band's songs, but started with their 1968 album Friends , his superiority as a rising songwriter. The original songs for the group included "Little Bird" (1968), "Forever" (1970), and "Slip On Through" (1970). Though unidentified, Wilson helped write "You Are So Beautiful", a hit for Joe Cocker in 1974. Wilson's music has been characterized to reflect "his sadness and a little flaunt of his blissful charm, setting it apart from Brian's music.... all the happy looks -love-Beach Boy, Dennis Wilson lives a life-fast-dead-young motto of the proverbial.... Its wild side masks the bottom which, by turns, ponders, self-hatred, sensitivity, and anxiety. "

The only solo album of Wilson, Pacific Ocean Blue (1977), was released for warm reviews, but moderate commercial reception. Written and recorded for several years, the album peaked on the US record chart at number 96 for 12 weeks stay. Session for follow-up, Bamboo , was destroyed before his death. In 1988, Wilson was inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Beach Boys. He died of drowning at the age of 39 in 1983.

Initial years

Wilson was born in Inglewood, California, son of Audree Neva (nÃÆ' Â © e Korthof) and Murry Gage Wilson. He spent his family years with his brothers and his parents in Hawthorne, California. Dennis's role in family dynamics, which he himself acknowledges, is that of the scapegoat. Of the three brothers Wilson, he was the most likely to be beaten by Murry's strong-willed father. Held with a lot of physical energy and aggressive nature, Dennis often refuses to participate in singalongs' families, and also avoids vocalizing on early recordings that Brian made on portable tape recorders. However, Dennis will be singing with his brothers late at night in the room with them, a song that Brian later called "our special song we will sing", titled "Get off, Get off the Ivory Tower." Brian noted about the end-of-the-art three-night harmony: "We developed a little mix that helped us when we started getting into Beach Boys stuff."

1960: Career beginning

Dennis's mother, Audree, forced Brian to put Dennis into the original lineup of Beach Boys. Designed by Mike Love's cousin, Dennis has approached Brian to form a group and write a song about surfing. The Beach Boys was formed in August 1961, with Murry taking over as manager, and was soon successful. Although Beach Boys developed their image based on California's surfing culture, Dennis was the only true surfer in the band.

In the early years of Beach Boys, Brian gave him the role of drummer. Dennis quickly learned the basics of playing drums in school lessons and, like other members, he got more work. Brian noted Dennis's limited drumming techniques early and, as the mid-60s approached, often hired session drummers, such as Hal Blaine, to perform on studio recordings (additionally replacing all other players at one time or another, under request for band members in tour). Dennis accepts this situation with equilibrium, generally giving high praise for his brother's work, as Brian's composition becomes more mature and complex.

Despite being given some of the lead vocals on the early Beach Boys recording, she sings leads on "Do You Want Dance ?," the group hit in February 1965. Later that year at Beach Boys' Party! , Dennis sang The Beatles song "You Got to Hide Your Love Away." She accompanied herself on guitar.

Early in 1963 Dennis worked with former collaborator Brian Gary Usher, a neighbor at Hawthorne who became a prolific creative figure in the recording of surf music and, later, the people. As a duo that writes, produces, and performs, and calls themselves Four-Speeds, they released their single "RPM" backed by "My Stingray".

1968-1969: episode Manson

In 1968, Dennis drove through Malibu when he saw two female hitchhikers, Patricia Krenwinkel and Ella Jo Bailey. He picked it up and dropped it off at the destination. Later, Dennis noticed the same two girls riding again. This time he took them to his home at 14400 Sunset Boulevard. He remembers that he "told [the girls] about our involvement with Maharishi and they told me that they also have a teacher, a man named Charlie who recently got out of jail after 12 years." Dennis then went to the recording session; when he returned that night, he was found in the driveway by Charles Manson, and when Wilson walked to his house, about a dozen people occupied the place, most of them young women. They were later known as members of the "Manson Family".

Dennis was initially mesmerized by Manson and his followers, who stayed with Dennis for a later period with his expenses, cost him up to $ 100,000 in money, cars, clothing, food, and penicillin injections for persistent gonorrhea. At the end of 1968, he told the Mirror Record magazine that "when I met [Charlie] I found he had good musical ideas. We're writing together now. He's stupid, in some ways, but I accept his approach and have [learned] from him. "Several Manson songs were recorded in Brian's home studio. This session for Manson is produced by Brian and Carl, not Dennis as it is sometimes suggested. Furthermore, Dennis introduced Manson to several friends in the music business, including Byrds producer Terry Melcher, whose home on 10050 Cielo Drive will be hired by director Roman Polanski and his wife, actress Sharon Tate. Two years later, the Manson family members will kill Tate and several others in this house.

In September 1968, Dennis recorded a Manson song for Beach Boys, originally titled "Stop There" but reworked as "Never Learn Not to Love", as the single B-side was released in December. It is credited solely to Dennis. Angry with this, Manson threatened murder. When asked why Manson was not credited, Wilson explained: "He does not want that, he wants money instead I give him something worth a hundred thousand dollars." According to Beach Boys collaborator, Van Dyke Parks: "One day, Charles Manson took the bullet out and showed it to Dennis, who asked, 'What's this?' And Manson replied, "That's a bullet. Every time you look at it, I want you to think how nice your kids are still safe. "Well, Dennis grabbed Manson's head and threw him to the ground and started hitting him... I heard him, but I was not there."

As Dennis became increasingly aware of Manson's volatile nature and the increasingly violent tendency, he finally severed a friendly relationship just by getting out of the house and leaving Manson there. When Manson later sought further contact, he left a bullet with Dennis's housekeeper to be delivered with a secret message, which Dennis perceived as a threat. In August 1969, members of the Manson Family committed the killing of Tate/LaBianca. Shortly after, Manson visits Wilson's house, telling him that he's "just into the moon" and asking for money, which Dennis gave. In November, Manson was arrested and later convicted of murder charges and conspiracy to commit murder.

For the rest of Dennis's life, he rarely publicly declared his involvement with the Manson Family, telling the prosecutor that he knew nothing about Manson's murder or motives, because he feared Manson would get out of jail or hit him. In 1976, he commented that "I'm not talking about Manson, I think he is a sick person I think Roman and all the wonderful people who have a beautiful family and they have cut their breasts I want to benefit from that ? " According to biographer Mark Dillon: "Some of the attributes of [Wilson] subsequent spiral self-destructive behavior - especially his drug intake - for fear and guilt for ever introducing this nasty Wizard into a Hollywood scene."

1960s-1970s: Artistic Growth

The first main composition of Dennis is "Little Bird" (1968), the B-side of the single "Friends", plus "Be Still", is also papa to nature and reflects its place in the natural world where surfing hobby is only a very small part. He has further compositions featured on later albums of Beach Boys such as 20/20 (1969), Sunflower (1970), Carl and Passions - "So Tough" (1972), Holland (1973) and others. Sunflower includes the song "Forever" and three other songs written by Dennis. Their inclusion was said to be on the label's urging, claiming that Dennis's songs sounded more "modern" than the other rejected Beach Boys songs.

When Brian drew more and more from active participation with his group, Dennis stepped in as the main creative force of the Beach Boys, having learned the production techniques from observing his brother. At least two of his songs are included in all but one of the six albums released in a five-year period, peaking with four tracks on each of 20/20 and Sunflower . When a certain territorial jealousy arose within the band for his growing role, he began to hold back the songs for his self-projected solo album.

On December 4, 1970, Dennis released his first solo material, a little-known single released only in Europe and England under the name "Dennis Wilson & Rumbo." The single features "Sound of Free", on its usual freedom theme, on the A-side with romantic "Lady" (also known as "Fallin 'In Love") on the B-side. The song was later closed by American Spring and released as B-side for their single "Shyin 'Away".

Dennis starred alongside James Taylor and Warren Oates in the critically acclaimed film Two-Lane Blacktop (1971) as "The Mechanic". The film depicts "The Driver" (Taylor) and "The Mechanic" driving aimlessly throughout the United States in their 1955 Chevy, surviving on money gained from street racing.

In 1971, Dennis injured his hand badly enough to prevent him from playing drums for some time. Ricky Fataar took over as a group drummer between 1972 and 1974. During this period Dennis acted as a co-frontman alongside Mike Love, as well as playing keyboard and singing. 1973 live album The Beach Boys in Concert only featured Dennis on stage among thousands of fans on the album cover; However, no songs are included in the line. During hiatus recording three years after Holland, Dennis's voice got worse. At that moment the antics on stage (including racing) occasionally interfere with the live show of Beach Boys. In 1974, along with the success of the '60s hits Endless Summer compilation, Dennis returned to his role behind the drums. According to Dennis's biographer Jon Stebbins, this year he co-wrote lyrics and modified the melodic part of "You Are So Beautiful" at a party with Billy Preston.

Pacific Ocean Blue

In 1977, Dennis had collected a stack of songs he had written and recorded while fractions within the Beach Boys became too stressful for him. He stated: "If these people want to take this beautiful and happy spiritual music, we have made and all the things we strive for and throw it out the window just because of money, then there is something wrong with everything and I do not want to be there part of it. "He then approached James William Guercio, owner of Caribou Records, who established a" structured recording process "before signing Dennis to a two-album deal. According to Guercio: "My discussion with Dennis is along the lines, 'you just tell Gregg [Jakobson] what you need - you have a studio and your job is to finish the dream. For the vision Trish Roach [personal assistant] will do the paperwork and Coordinator Gregg This is your project... You have to do what Brian used to do, use whoever you want - this is your decision and you are responsible. "

Dennis released his debut solo album Pacific Ocean Blue in 1977. The album sold poorly, peaking at No. 1. 96 on the US Billboard album chart. The date was booked for Dennis Wilson's solo tour but this was eventually canceled when his record company withdrew concert support due to poor album sales and the perception that he became increasingly unreliable. He sometimes did his solo material on the 1977 Beach Boys tour. Although Dennis claimed the album was "no substance", the Blue Ocean Pacific received positive reviews, then developed the status as a heretic.

The album was largely printed between the 1990s and 2000s. In June 2008, the album was re-released on CD as an expanded edition. It was selected as the "Publication of the Year" in 2008 at Rolling Stone and Mojo magazine, and made No. 16 on the English LP charts and No. 8 on both the Billboard Catalog and graphics Billboard Internet Sales.

Bamboo

Pacific Ocean Blue at follow-up, Bamboo, began production in 1978 at Brother Studios in Santa Monica with keyboardist collaboration Then Son and close friend Dennis Carli MuÃÆ'Â ± oz as songwriter and producer. The first four songs officially recorded for Bamboo are the compositions of MuÃÆ' Â ± oz: "It's Not Too Late", "Constant Companion", "All Alone", and "Under the Moonlight". The project was initially flooded by the lack of financing and disruption of the Beach Boys projects simultaneously. Bamboo was officially released in 2008 along with re-publication of Pacific Ocean Blue .

Two songs from Bamboo sessions, "Love Surrounds Me" and "Baby Blue," were named for Beach Boys 1979 L.A. (Light Album) . Dennis and Brian were also recorded together aside from the Beach Boys in the early 1980s. These sessions remain unreleased despite being widely booted as The Cocaine Sessions .

1970s-1983: Personal powers

In the following years, Dennis abused alcohol and heroin. A bar fights that allegedly caused some damage to his throat at a point in the early to mid 1970s had affected his voice. After a confrontation at the airport runway, Dennis declared to Rolling Stone on September 3, 1977, that he had left the Beach Boys: "They keep saying that I have my solo album now, as I have to go in the corner and leaving the Beach Boys for them. This album really annoys them, they do not like to admit it does well, they never even admit it in an interview. "Two weeks later, the dispute settled and Dennis rejoined the group.

At one time, Brian's girlfriend and nurse, Carolyn Williams, accused Dennis of luring Brian to buy cocaine for $ 15,000. When Brian's bodyguard, Rocky Pamplin, and Wilsons cousin, Stan Love learned of this incident, they physically attacked Dennis at his home; they were fined about $ 1,000, and Dennis filed a restraining order.

When Beach Boys presses Brian to re-read herself into Eugene Landy's Twenty-Four Hour Therapy program, Dennis is told by his friends that he will be the next band target, where Dennis replied, "No, they will not do anything "He was proved wrong, and in 1983, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Carl Wilson and manager Tom Hulett had banned Dennis from appearing with the group. Dennis was later told that he would be allowed to rejoin the Beach Boys only if he admitted himself to the detoxification program.

Death

In November 1983, Dennis was homeless and lived a nomadic life. She went to the therapy center in Arizona for two days, and then on December 23, checked into St. Medical Hospital. John in Santa Monica, where he stayed until the night of December 25th. After a fierce fight at the Santa Monica Bay Inn, Dennis enters a different hospital to treat his injuries. A few hours later, he emptied himself and reported back drink immediately. On December 28, three weeks after his 39th birthday, Dennis sank at Marina Del Rey after drinking all day and then diving in the afternoon to recover items he had dumped into the sea at the marina from his yacht three years earlier. Forensic pathologist Michael Hunter believes that Dennis experienced a shallow water shortage shortly before his death.

On January 4, 1984, the U.S. Coast Guard. burying Dennis's corpse at sea, off the coast of California. The Beach Boys released a statement shortly thereafter: "We know Dennis wants to continue the tradition of The Beach Boys." His passion will remain in our music. " The song "Farewell My Friend" is played at the funeral.

Dennis' widow Shawn Love reports that Dennis wants a burial at sea, and brothers Carl and Brian do not want Dennis cremated. Since non-veterans of the Coast Guard and the Navy were not allowed to be buried in US waters unless cremated, Dennis's funeral was made possible by President Reagan's intervention. In 2002, Brian expressed his unhappiness with the arrangement, believing that Dennis should have been given a traditional funeral.

Legacy and musicianship

PopMatters penulis Tony Sclafani dirangkum pada 2007:

With all appearances, the happy Beach-Boy goes, Dennis Wilson underwent a proverbial live-fast-dead-young motto. To some degree, that's a fair judgment. Dennis did drive fast, hanging out with hippies (including Charles Manson) and dating his part of a beautiful California woman. But just like his brother, Brian, Dennis was repressed mercilessly by his father. Its wild side covers the lower part which, in turn, is reflective, self-hating, sensitive, and anxious. Dennis's music reflects his sadness and flaunts a bit of beautiful charm, making it different from Brian's music. Dennis never sang about fun, and no surfboard or female surfer image ever appeared in Dennis Wilson's song.

Although it is often said that Dennis's drums in the recording of Beach Boys are filled exclusively by studio musicians, this is a common misconception.

In 1967, Dennis was named "closest to his own musical ideals... He always emphasized fusion, in their work, pop and classical music." Dennis says that his brother Brian is "inspirational," not influence, and that "Musically, I'm far from Brian, he's a hundred times more than what I do musically."

In 1988, Dennis was sworn in to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame posthumously as a member of the Beach Boys.
