Original building (1907-1989)

The original hotel on this site was built by General Marshall C. Wentworth, a Civil War veteran, and was designed by Charles Frederick Whittlesey in the Spanish Mission Revival style. Opened in February 1907 as Hotel Wentworth , but the structure was only partially completed, with the first four stories completed and a temporary roof. The settlement of the hotel has been delayed due to the shortage of construction crews caused by the redevelopment in San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake. The year's heavy rain drove away the prospective guests, and Wentworth closed its doors in July 1907 after its first season.

The Wentworth was bought by rail conglomerate Henry E. Huntington in 1911 and reopened in 1914 as the The Huntington Hotel after a major redesign by architect Myron Hunt who added two upstairs hotels and his central belvedere tower iconic.. It remained under Huntington management until 1918. The hotel eventually comprised over 20 acres. Between 1920 and 1926, 27 cottage bungalows were built on land to accommodate long-term guests. The first outdoor Olympic-size swimming pool in California was also added to the hotel in 1926, when the hotel, once a winter resort, began operating year-round.

The hotel was later owned by Stephen W. Royce, who sold it to the Sheraton Corporation in 1954. Later changed its name to Huntington-Sheraton Hotel . As a Sheraton, many periods of interior hotel detailing were covered, and the Lanai Building was built next to the pool in 1967. The Sheraton sold the hotel to Keikyu AS, Inc. in 1974, but continued to manage the property.

After the Mexico City earthquake of 1985, seismic tests conducted at the hotel showed the main building unsafe. As a result, the main wing of the hotel had to be closed unannounced on October 20, 1985, causing chaos to scramble to relocate hundreds of social events booked at the hotel over the coming months. 89 rooms in the Lanai wing of 1967 and 18 lodge homes continue to operate as Huntington Sheraton Lanai and Cottages , while the six-story main building sits empty. Huntington Hotel Associates (HHA), consisting of developers Lary Mielke, Tom Tellefsen, William Zimmerman and James M. Galbraith, announced plans in 1986 to destroy the main wing of the hotel and replace it with a replica. After a year of debate and many requests from preservationists, Pasadena voters voted on May 19, 1987, to grant zoning approval for demolition of the main building. HHA bought the hotel from Keikyu in December 1987. Sheraton stopped operating the hotel in January 1988, and its name was changed to The Huntington Hotel & amp; Cottages . The contents of the main building were sold to the public in June and July 1988 and the demolition of the main building began on 27 March 1989, which lasted for three months. Lanai and cottages closed in the mid-1990s when construction of the new main building took place.

Due to his extensive experience with other Ritz-Carlton Hotel designs, including RC Laguna Niguel, RC Rancho Mirage and RC Naples, Florida; HHA maintains WATG Architects (Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo) as architects of design and architects of records for all major projects and buildings. Local Architects McClellan Cruz Gaylord is actively involved with the rights and permits and is responsible for the renovation of Lanai Wing and Historic Carriage House. Wison & amp; Partner from Dallas, Texas is an Interior Designer for the project.

During the demolition and reconstruction of the main wing, two historic ballrooms, the Vienna Ballroom (originally the hotel dining room) and the Georgia Ballroom (originally the hotel theater) were retained and incorporated into the new hotel, alongside other buildings such as swimming pools, lanai and bungalows, need to be destroyed. The $ 100 million reconstruction project revealed 10 colored glass windows made of opalescent glass in the Georgia Ballroom, which had been covered by the Sheraton Corporation in 1954 when the room was converted into a dining room.

The hotel reopened on March 18, 1991 with 383 rooms as The Ritz-Carlton, Huntington Hotel . The new building largely mimics the exterior from the original, but offers modern amenities. Its name is changed to The Ritz-Carlton, Huntington Hotel & amp; Spa in April 1998. In October 2007, the hotel was sold to Great Eagle Holdings for $ 170 million and renamed The Langham Huntington, Pasadena, on January 8, 2008, managed by Langham Hotels International.
