History

The name Pattaya evolved from the Phraya Tak march (then King Taksin) and his troops from Ayutthaya to Chanthaburi, which occurred before the fall of the capital to the Burmese invaders in 1767.

When his troops arrived in the vicinity of what is now Pattaya, Phraya Tak meets the troops of a local leader named Nai Klom, who tries to intercept him. When the two met face to face, Nai Klom was impressed with Phraya Tak's dignified and disciplined stance of his army. He gave up without a fight and joined his troops. Place soldiers meet each other then known as "Thap Phraya", which means "soldier of Phraya". This then becomes Pattaya, the name winds blowing from southwest to northeast at the beginning of the rainy season.

Pattaya is a fishing village until the 1960s. Later, during the Vietnam War, American soldiers stationed near U-Tapao or other US bases in Thailand began to visit Pattaya. One story, unverified by a credible source, notes that it all began when a group of 500 American soldiers stationed at a military base in Korat were taken to Pattaya on 29 June 1959 for a week of rest and relaxation. They rented several houses at the southern end of the beach from a Thai aristocrat, Lord Sunthorn. Although they stayed for a while, the soldiers had fun and babbled about the place. The word spread among other American soldiers stationed in the area and Pattaya quickly became a hot alternative to Bangkok.

Demographics

The city ( mueang ) has 320,262 inhabitants and is calculated at the 2010 census (National Statistics Office). Most of these people are counted as Thai, with most migrants unrecognized, although the details are quite complicated because even indigenous Thai people are stateless, and migrant workers have since been largely regulated (albeit with urgent foreign pressure ). Therefore, the census population does not even represent the total number. As for Thai citizens and law enforcers (very few) who register cities as their hometowns, the province's felling population is 107,944 in 2010, slightly increased to 118,511 by 2017. Like the Metropolitan Region of Bangkok, the number of registered residents issued by a agents from the Office of National Statistics barely capture the scope of urban transformation that has occurred over time - the economy depends on the large number of casual Thai workers working in the city but still enrolled in their hometown, there are many work turns and to and from the capital, as well as seasonal agricultural migration. Migrant workers from neighboring countries, and many long-term expatriates living in cities as retired or self-employed or traditionally contracted are not counted. There is never a reliable figure for the population, but the thinking is quite large (on the order of half a million people) given the large number of migrant workers that are everywhere and occurring in Thailand. Pattaya City excludes some nearby areas such as Nong Prue (73,901 people in the 2010 census) and Huay Yai.

Pattaya also has a large population inflows of short tourism, with 2,000 hotels and 136,000 rooms available by 2015.

Because of the tourism industry, many people from the northeast (known as Isan, Thailand's poorest region) have come to work in Pattaya, and counted for census purposes in their hometown.

There is a rapidly growing foreign pension community living in Pattaya. Thai immigration has a special visa category for foreigners over the age of 50 who wish to retire in Thailand. Pattaya appeals to many retirees from other countries not only because of the exotic and easy climate and lifestyle, but also because the cost of living is lower than in many countries.

Physical geography

Pattaya, in the Gulf of Thailand, is about 160 kilometers (99 mi) south of Bangkok in Bang Lamung District.

Pattaya City is a special city area that includes all the Nong Prue (Nongprue) and Na Kluea (Naklua) tambon and Nong Pla Lai. The township of Bang Lamung that forms the northern border of Pattaya includes parts of Bang Lamung (Banglamung), Bang Nongung, Nong Pla Lai and Takhian Tia. Bang Sali is on the southern border of Pattaya.

"Greater Pattaya" occupies most of the Banglamung coastline (one of the eleven districts that make up Chonburi Province). It is divided into the larger northern part that extends to the area east of Naklua Beach (northernmost beach) and Pattaya Beach (main beach) plus Bukit Pratamnak (often called "Bukit Buddha" because of the temples on the hill) cape directly at south of Pattaya Beach, and the smaller southern part covering the area east of Jomtien Beach (just south of Bukit Pratamnak).

Environment

Pattaya produces 450 tons of solid waste per day. The city spends more than 300 million baht on garbage disposal and disposal every year. Average pay 1,600 baht to process every ton of garbage. Significant waste volume allegedly dumped into the sea by tourist boats.

In July 2017 Pattaya Beach was breached for a week by raw sewage poured out of the storm channel. City officials blamed the incident on faulty pumps and an untreated Pattaya water treatment plant. The environment ministry said it would increase pollution law enforcement and encourage Pattaya to improve wastewater treatment efficiency. According to the ministry, Pattaya has 1,047 sources of waste and waste pollution identified, the number is growing as the city grows. Sea water along Pattaya's coastline is poor quality even in the absence of a waste spill and "could endanger human and marine life", the regional environmental office said. They consider the quality of seawater near Pattaya's central coast as "poor" and deteriorate. They assessed water quality near Na Klua in North Pattaya, South Pattaya, Ko Lan, and Jomtien Beach as "good enough". The city has considered expanding two water management installations to increase capacity for better wastewater treatment before disposal into the sea. The water treatment plant in Soi Wat Nongyai after the expansion will be able to handle about 130,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day, up from 80,000 cubic meters at present.

Beaches and islands

The main sweep of the bay area is divided into two main beaches. Pattaya Beach is parallel to the city center, and runs from Pattaya south to Nuea Walking Street. Along Beach Road are restaurants, shopping and bars.

Pratumnak is on the south side of Pattaya and is very popular for viewpoints and temples (Wat Phra Yai) on the hill. Pattaya Park and Pattaya tower are at the southern end of Pratumnak and Pattaya Exhibition and Convention Hall (P.E.A.C.H), positioned at the northern end of Pratumnak. In recent years, Pratumnak has gained popularity due to its more natural environment, nicer beaches, and convenient location between Jomtien and Pattaya city.

Jomtien is divided from Pattaya by Thepprasit Road, south route to Pattaya city. It consists of high-rise condos, beachfront hotels, bungalow complexes, shops, bars and restaurants.

The offshore islands include three "islands": Ko Lan (main island), Ko Sak, and Ko Krok, 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) from Pattaya beach. The "distant islands" are Ko Phai (main island), Ko Man Wichai, Ko Hu Chang and Ko Klung Badan, located off the west coast of "nearby islands". Ko Rin is located offshore in the southwest, south of the Ko Phai group. The names of "nearby islands", "distant islands", and "Pulau Karang" are used for marketing purposes only and do not conform to island group naming conventions and are not shown on the maritime graphs published by the Royal Thai Hydrographic Service.

In June 2016, the Regional Environment Office reported that, "Sea water along the busy coast of central Pattaya has poor quality and can endanger human and marine life."

Nightlife

Pattaya has gained part of its reputation as a tourist destination because of the sex industry and the resulting nightlife, and this notoriety has influenced the evolution of the city in many ways. Prostitution in Thailand is technically illegal but is tolerated in most cities, including Pattaya. A large number of host bars, gogo bars, massage parlors, saunas and hotels by the hour, cater to foreign tourists as well as locals. This is very prominent on Walking Street as well as other areas around the city. Efforts have been made to clean the city's image.

The articles in the English tabloid The Sun and Daily Mirror have described Pattaya as "the sex capital of the world", "modern Sodom and Gomorrah". This provoked the anger of government officials as high as Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha. Pol Kol Apichai Krobpetch, chief of Pattaya police, denied that Pattaya is a sex trade paradise. Disappointed with English media stories, he insists that they are contrived. "There is no such thing as prostitution in Pattaya," said Colonel Apichai. "Where do they get 27,000 sex workers in Pattaya? Anyone can make this information.... Thai women having sex with strangers are their personal problems, if they like each other, I do not see anything wrong with what they do in behind the closed door. "In response, social worker Pattaya Surang Janyam, director of Service Workers at the Group Foundation, said that the estimated number of Pattaya sluts published in the Daily Mirror is inaccurate:" 27,000 sex workers in Pattaya are too low We have more sex workers than that. "

As evidence of the government's commitment to clean up Pattaya, on Feb. 26, 2017 at 8 pm, 60 police and army officers stormed the infamous Pattaya Soi 6 to check lawlessness. When the examination is completed, the police announce that all licenses are in order and there is no violation of any law, including prostitution, which takes place there.

Pattaya also has the largest gay scene in Asia based around Boyztown, Jomtien Complex, and Sunee Plaza. The city is also famous for the flamboyant cabaret show kathoey in which transsexual and transgender entertainers perform in crowded houses.

Crime

In recent years, Pattaya has become a hideout for foreigners who have connections with organized crime in their home country, and dozens have been killed in gang-related disputes.

Visitors may experience minor crimes, usually confined to pickpockets and confident tricks, especially in and around major tourist areas such as Jomtien and Pattaya Beaches and on the "baht bus". A Special Police division has been established to assist travelers who are victims of crime. The British eight-episode documentary Big Trouble in Tourist Thailand describes a crime involving tourists in Pattaya.

On April 11, 2009, Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva declared a state of emergency in the Pattaya and Chonburi areas, in response to red-shirted anti-government protesters who broke into the conference center of the Royal Cliff Beach Resort hotel complex, where the ASEAN Meeting was held.
