When completed, the new park will offer a variety of facilities, such as the amphitheater, festival venue, playground, bright tennis court and cycling path. This park should be completed on time for the Oyster Festival 2009. This recreation park will be located on Old Georgetown Road bordering the Ocean Ridge Plantation community and is part of a $ 500,000 federal grant for parks throughout the county. Another scheduled project is the Shallotte Blvd Recreation Area, a joint project between Ocean Isle Beach Land Conservancy and Ocean Isle Beach Town. The park will be on Shallotte Blvd and the ferry landing at the east end of the island. The recreation area will have gazebos, picnic tables, fishing docks, and walkways with steps towards the sand.
Best Recovered Beach Award
The Coast and Coastal Conservation Association of the Americas named Ocean Isle Beach the Best Beach Award winner in 2008. Ocean Isle Beach's search for a federal beach restoration program began after Hurricane Hugo destroyed the area in 1989. The city lobbies members of Congress for federal funding and opens a savings account of capital reserves to provide the local part of the funds needed for recovery. Coastal engineers started the project in 2001 and provided high-quality sand for the beach and created a deeper channel for seafarers. Judging for rewards is based on three criteria: the economic and ecological benefits that coastal communities bring to their communities; the short and long term success of the restoration project; and the challenges facing each community during the course of the project.
