History
The Upper Bay of Newport is a canyon, carved by a river in the Pleistocene period. The Lower Bay of Newport was formed much later by the sand brought by sea currents, which built the offshore coast which is now recognized as the Newport Beach Balboa Peninsula.
Before the settlers reached the coast of California, the area of ââNewport and the surrounding area is a very prominent Indian land. Indian shells and relics can still be found today scattered throughout the region. In fact, throughout the 1800s, settlers began to settle in the area due to the availability of land. The State of California sells plots of land for $ 1 per piece in the Newport area. The Anglo-American population in the area grew substantially after the 1870 event when the 105-ton steamer named The Vaquero captained by Captain Samuel S. Dunnells (against the warning posted by surveyors) was safely steered through that lower and upper bay of Newport, where the load is lowered. James Irvine, after hearing the shocking news, quickly traveled from his home in San Francisco to San Joaquin Ranch. Met at Irvine's farmhouse near today UC Irvine with his brother, Robert Irvine, and friend James McFadden, they all agreed that the newly-discovered port should be given a simple name, "Newport" so where Newport Beach gets its name.
In 1905, municipal construction increased when the Pacific Electric Railway established a southern terminal in Newport connecting the coast with downtown Los Angeles. In 1906 (with a population of 206 residents), dispersed settlements were included as the Newport Beach City.
The settlements are filled in the Peninsula, West Newport, Newport Island, Balboa Island and Lido Isle. In 1923 Corona del Mar was annexed and in 2002 Newport Coast, East Santa Ana Heights and San Joaquin Hills, annexed. In 2008, after a long battle with the city of Costa Mesa, Newport Beach annexed West Santa Ana Heights.

Newport Harbor and Newport Bay
Newport Harbor is a semi-artificial port formed by the dredging of the Newport Bay estuary in the early 1900s. Some artificial islands are built, now covered with private homes: Newport Island, Balboa Island, Little Balboa Island, Collins Island, Bay Island, Harbor Island, Lido Isle and Linda Isle.
Newport Harbor has supported maritime industries such as shipbuilding, shipbuilding and commercial fishing, but is now mostly used for recreation. The edges are mostly occupied by private homes and private docks. With about 9,000 boats, Newport Harbor is one of the largest recreational boat harbors on the US west coast. This is a popular destination for all boating activities, including sailing, fishing, rowing, canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding.
Current commercial maritime operations include the Catalina Flyer ferry to Catalina Island, a harbor tour, sport fishing and day tours observing whales and charters, and several small commercial fishing vessels.
Newport Bay is divided by the Pacific Coast Highway bridge, which is too low for most sailboats and very large boats to skip. North bridge referred to as Upper Newport Bay, or Back Bay. The southern part of the bridge is commonly called Lower Newport Bay, or Newport Harbor. However, Back Bay also has port facilities, especially marinas and launch pads at The Dunes.
The northern end of the Newport Harbor channel around Lido Island has a number of small business centers and at one time used by fishing fleets as their homes. On the northeast side of the channel, Lido Marina Village now provides local ports to many "Newport Party Boats" as well as small traders and local restaurants. It also hosts local boat events every year as well as the organic "Farmer's Market" on Sunday, in addition to being a port for the local Gondola Company. In 2014, the center is closed for renovation.
In 1927 a house was built at the mouth of the entrance of Newport Harbor which came to be known as China House of China Cove. The house was built using traditional Chinese architecture. It was a landmark in Newport Beach Harbor until it was destroyed in the 1980s. Some of the original roof can be seen in a house located in China Cove.
Upper Newport Bay is an estuary formed by the prehistoric flow of the Santa Ana River. Today it is run by a small river from San Diego Creek. Most of Upper Newport Bay is a protected natural area known as the Upper Newport Bay Nature Reserve, which was established in 1975.
