Mission Beach stretches almost two miles from the ocean front. It is bordered by the mouth of the San Diego River to the south, Mission Bay Park to the east, and the Pacific Beach community to the north. A sidewalk runs along the beach on both sides of the ocean and community bay. The main artery through Mission Beach is Mission Boulevard. This community is divided into Southern Missions, peninsulas, and Northern Missions. At the southern end of the beach, a dock, with grass, parking, and walking, extends into the ocean.

Land

Many of the residential buildings in Mission Beach were built in the 1930s and 40s as summer huts and some dates in the early 1920s. The rare bungalow plane at Manhattan Court was built in 1924. Due to problems to work with developing in the sand, Mission Beach was developed later from neighboring communities from Ocean Beach to the south and Pacific Beach to the north. As a result of the new official division in 1914, driven by the sale of land in adjacent communities and a new wooden bridge connecting Mission Beach with Ocean Beach, John D. Spreckels offers little to sell. As a result, Mission Beach is the most populated residential community in San Diego with land use in most of its land of 36 residential units per acre. It also has the smallest lot in town, ranging from 1,250 square feet (116 m 2 ) to 2,400 square feet (220 m 2 ). Some have been consolidated to form much larger ones. Many structures within the community have been rebuilt into two-story homes. The wooden bridge to Ocean Beach was closed for traffic in 1950 and destroyed in 1951.

Celebrities who have swum at Plunge include Esther Williams and Johnny Weissmuller. The roof of the building is rolled open to make it an indoor and outdoor pool. The Plunge has been closed since 2014 due to damage. Plans to undermine and rebuild Waterfall approved in January 2016, with work to be completed by 2018.
