Annual conference
NCGE holds an annual conference every summer, called the National Conference on Geography Education. This annual event offers live workshops in new teaching methods, technologies, resources, as well as research papers, networking opportunities, field trips and more. The conference field trips include local and regional places that have geographical and historical significance. The exhibition hall is managed by government, industry, nonprofit, and academia and offers books, journals, projects, curriculum, software, hardware, and others to support geography teaching. Each conference is highlighted by an annual address. Past keynote speakers include:

Partnership
The NCGE as an active organization is partnering with other organizations, including the American Geographers Association, the National Council for Social Studies, and other organizations. Its members are active in the National Science Teachers Association, the North American Association for Environmental Education, the Geographic Association, and in other organizations. Many of its members are also active with the National Geographic Society's educational programs and with the National Science Foundation. Some members are active in working with the US Congress on bills and policies that strengthen geography education at all levels, notably "Geography Teaching Is a Fundamental (TGIF)" Act.
Publications
The weekly e-mail newsletter of NCGE is published every week. Its content includes news of geography education, events, opportunities, and resources.
The NCGE journals include "Geography Journal " and " The Geography Teacher ." The Journal has been published for almost a century, beginning with a different name, while The Geography Teacher began in 2000. The Journal of Geography focuses on research in geography education. This is a scientific, peer-reviewed journal designed for educators, offering the best in teaching and research development in geographical education. JOG publishes research on innovative approaches to teaching and learning, classroom-tested ideas, curriculum, book reviews, and more.
The focus of Master Geography is to illustrate how geography can be taught in the classroom, through short articles, lesson plans, teaching tips, and news that are especially relevant for today's primary, secondary, and pre-service teachers.
Taylor and Francis are publishers of these journals.
National Geographic Standard
NCGE partnered with the National Geographic Society, the Association of American Geographers, and the American Geographical Society during the 1990s to create a national standard for geography, titled "Geography for Life" (1994). Content standards that must be known and expected by students at a certain level of education by grades 4, 8, and 12. National Standards in Geography are organized into 18 standards covering six elements.
NCGE plays a key role in revising and updating national standards over the period 2008 to 2012, culminating in the publication of updated geography standards in September 2012. The revised content captures the growth and importance of geospatial technology and spatial thinking in geography for 18 years. Knowledge statements and performance statements are broken down by grade level (grades 4, 8 and 12).
More projects
NCGE members created Geography Map, an exemplary body of skills and activities, as part of the 21st Century Partnerships for Skills. NCGE members also work together in joint publications, joint participation in conferences, and in the development of research and curricula with other organizations, notably the Geographical Association, the American Geographical Association, the National Council for Social Studies and North America. Association for Environmental Education. NCGE is also involved with an effort called the "Roadmap" project, funded by the National Science Foundation to National Geographic, with the aim of creating key documents that define what geographical literacy is and why it is important for education and society.
NCGE holds a webinar series that is open to all and free to members. Topics include teaching with a Web-based Geographic Information System, teaching about the Erie Channels using digital maps, imagery, and geographical investigations, place-based learning, fieldwork techniques, advanced human placement teaching methods (APHG), and more. This webinar is performed by experts on each topic and offers hands-on training as well as the ability to watch recorded archived webinars.
