Cathedral City is a town in Riverside County, California. The colloquially known as Cat City , the population is 51,200 in the 2010 census. Located between Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage, it is one of nine towns in the Coachella Valley (area of ââPalm Springs) in Southern California. Cathedral City has the second largest population in Coachella Valley, after Indio.
The name of the city comes from "Cathedral Canyon" south of the city, so named in 1850 by Colonel Henry Washington because of its rock formations reminiscent of the cathedral. The city began as a housing subdivision in 1925, but was not included until 1981, and has grown significantly in the population ever since.

History
The Cathedral City had a downtown revitalization program beginning in the late 1990s, with many completed in 2005. A new town hall was built like the IMAX/Mary Pickford cinema complex, and a total of 130 acres (0.53 km 2 ) from a new or renovated store.
Nightclubs of the depression era
In 1931 Al and Lou Wertheimer of the famous Detroit "Purple Gang" opened the Dunes Club outside the city limits of Palm Springs. This was followed in 1939 by Earl T. Sausser's 139 Club and Cove Club in 1941, built by Jake Katelman and Frank Portnoy.

Geography
According to the US Census Bureau, Cathedral City has a total area of ââ21.8 square miles (56 km 2 ), which, 21.5 square miles (56Ã, km 2 ) of it is ground and 0.3 square miles (0.78 km 2 ) of it (1.18%) is water.

2010
The US Census 2010 reports that Cathedral City has a population of 51,200. Population density was 2,353.3 people per square mile (908.6/km ò). The racial makeup of the Cathedral City is 32,537 (63.5%) White (32.3% Non-Hispanic White), 1.344 (2.6%) African American, 540 (1,1%) Native American, 2,562 (5.0 %) Asia, 55 (0.1%) Pacific Islands, 12,008 (23.5%) of other races, and 2,154 (4.2%) of two or more races. Hispanic or Latin from any race is 30,085 people (58.8%).
The Census reported that 50,905 people (99.4% of the population) live in households, 263 (0.5%) live in unembienced groups, and 32 (0.1%) are institutionalized.
There were 17,047 households, of which 6,574 (38.6%) had children under the age of 18 living in them, 7,589 (44.5%) were married couples living together, 2,291 (13, 4%) had a married woman without a current husband, 1,176 (6.9%) had a householder with no wife. There are 1,054 (6.2%) unmarried partners of the opposite sex, and 779 (4.6%) married couples or married couples. 4,292 households (25.2%) were made up of individuals and 2,259 (13.3%) had someone living alone 65 or older. The average household size is 2.99. There were 11,056 families (64.9% of all households); the average family size is 3.67.
The population was spread with 13,856 people (27.1%) under the age of 18, 4,906 people (9.6%) aged 18 to 24, 12,948 people (25.3%) aged 25 to 44, 12.127 people (23.7% aged 45 to 64 years. , and 7,363 people (14.4%) aged 65 years or older. The median age was 36.0 years. For every 100 females, there are 105.9 men. For every 100 women age 18 and over, there are 107.2 men.
There are 20,995 housing units with an average density of 965.0 per square mile (372.6/km²), of which 10.769 (63.2%) are owner-occupied, and 6,278 (36.8%) are occupied by tenants. Homeowner vacancy rate is 4.2%; the rental rate of job vacancies is 11.0%. 30,236 people (59.1% of the population) live in housing units occupied by owners and 20.669 people (40.4%) live in rental housing units.
During 2009-2013, the Cathedral City had an average household income of $ 44,406, with 20.5% of the population living below the federal poverty line.
2000
At the 2000 census, there were 42,647 people, 14,027 households, and 9,622 families living in the city. Population density was 2,224.0 people per square mile (858.5/km ò). There are 17,893 housing units with an average density of 933.1 per square mile (360.2 km/km²). City's racial makeup is 65.3% White, about half (50%) of the population are Hispanic or Latino. 2.7% Black or African American, 1.0% Native Americans, 3.7% Asia, 0.1% Pacific Islands, 23.1% of other races, and 4.1% of two or more races.
According to the 2000 Census, Cathedral City has a total of 14,027 households, 39.3% of whom have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.7% of whom are married couples living together, 11.9% of them have a housewife without a husband present, and 31.4% of them are not family. About 23% of all households consist of individuals with 11.0% of them comprising single individuals aged 65 or older. The average household size is 3.03 people and the average family size is about three and a half people (3.63), which houses Cathedral City above the California and US average in that category.
As reported in the most recent census, city populations are distributed across all age groups, with 31.1% below the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 17.3% from 45 to 64 , and 12.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The average age is 32 years. For every 100 females, there are 102.7 males. For every 100 women age 18 and over, there are 102.0 men. The city of Cathedral has many senior citizen communities and car home parks.
The average income for households in the city is $ 38,887, and the average income for families is $ 42,461. Men have an average income of $ 29,598, and the average income for women is $ 25,289. The per capita income for the city is $ 16,215. About 10.2% of families and 13.6% of the total population have income below the poverty line, including 16.3% of those under the age of 18 and 7.9% of those aged 65 years or older (elderly).
Economy
The town of Cathedral has a mega-automotive dealer known as Palm Springs Auto Mall based on the city limits with Palm Springs.
Cathedral City holds annual Mexico Day Independence festivals on every third weekend of September; to commemorate the event "el Grito de Dolores" held in the town hall/cinema complex.
Parks and recreation
Palm Country Club dates and golf course, designed in 1967 and opened in 1971, have an 18-hole "executive style" facility designed by Ted Robinson, ASCCA. It features 3,100 yards (2,800m) of golf from the longest tees to par of 58. The course rating is 54.9/57.2 and has a 90/93 tilt rating. It is a park in Bermuda Greens and includes lakes and sand traps. The most memorable tees are the 175th yard of the 8th yard, which has an accurate tee shot over the lake. The Phil Harris Golf Classic was held there for many years from the 1940s until the death of Phil Harris in 1994. Although it was built on the part of Agua Caliente Indian Reservation, the exclusive retired community of homes produced coated vegetables.
The Big League Dreams Sports Park softball complex is on the corner of the Date Palm and Dinah Shore drives, consisting of four softball fields designed as a replica of four major league arenas. The Pepsi All-Star Softball Game was held there since 1998. Cathedral City Soccer Park next to James Workman high school, is where the small league soccer team So Cal Coyote plays their game (and also at the Rancho Mirage High School stadium).

Golf
Several local golf resorts are located in Cathedral City. These include Lawrence Welk's Desert Oasis Hotel/resort located at Cathedral Canyon Country Club, Date Palm Country Club, Outdoor Resorts - Palm Springs, Cimarron Golf Resort, and Doral Desert Princess Resort and Golf Club.
Government
In the State Legislature of California, Cathedral City is in the 28th Senate District, represented by the Republic of Jeff Stone, and in the 56th Assembly District, represented by Democrat Eduardo Garcia.
In the United States House of Representatives, Cathedral City is in the 36th congress district of California, represented by Democrat Raul Ruiz.
Education
Cathedral City High School, opened in 1991, is the premier educational and recreational center for the city. College football, basketball and soccer teams won the CIF-Southern California championship in the late 1990s and 2000s. The Cathedral City is also home to Mayfield College, a private college that offers career training in health care, HVAC, technology, and business.
Famous people
The city is the home of teenage actress Suzanne Somers (she still has a second home in nearby Palm Desert), and a winter residence for actors Robert Duvall and Martin Landau in 1960, and TV host Monty Hall in the 1990s.
Timothy Bradley, a former WBO welterweight champion, also came from Cathedral City and graduated from Cathedral City College.
The tomb of Frank Sinatra is located in the Desert Memorial Park cemetery, as are some other prominent figures, including actress Jane Wyman, actor William Powell, and singer-songwriter Sonny Bono, former mayor of Palm Springs. Simon Oakland died in town
The Chicano folk musician, Lalo Guerrero, lived in the Cathedral City in his final years.
