Life
Little time
As a boy of nine Reid became a choir at the Trinity Church choir, New York. Today's regular chorus in a good choir at a young age has a major impact on him: "Retrospectively, one of the great advantages of training given by the Trinitarian Church choirs at the time was that tone production techniques were never a problem for discussion. , we are only encouraged to sing music and speak the words clearly Singing itself is the object of learning, not the singing mechanism. Looking back over the decades I have been teaching singing, it has become an ongoing emphasis, the goal is to communicate through the act of singing alone. "
Vulnerable fatigue
When his voice changed from soprano to baritone, he had sound lessons with various teachers in New York, including vocal scientist Dr. Douglas Stanley who became his assistant from 1934 to 1937. Through the tension of voice caused by confusing and contradictory voice training. , he was forced to leave a career in singing. He began to question the teaching methods used and this encouraged him to develop his own ideas on functional vocal training, which, although entirely based on the earlier Italian method, was combined with insights provided by modern science. "... I spent hours at the New York Public Library researching books on vocal pedagogy, I was very angry at the inability of my teaching and witnessed that I was determined to find a better answer.I have come to realize that my vocal situation is not unique because a lot of promising young singers have been victimized. It does seem to be a rule rather than an exception. " Stephen F. Austin also supports research on previous books about bel canto: "... there are wonderful sources that can help us get back on track." Tosi's observations on Florid Song , Mancini Practical Reflections on Singing Art are two great places to start. You may initially find a lack of frustrating detail. These special exercises are rare, but the principle is clearly stated, and that's where their greatest value lies. The first writings laid the foundations for the work of C. Reid, he did not invent a two-list theory, but he certainly rediscovered the theory and made it available and useful. There are many precious sources that every sound teacher should know: the writings of Lampertis, GarcÃÆ'a, Stockhausen, and of course, Cornelius Reid. "
Researching and teaching
In the 1940s Cornelius Reid was a pioneer in research into the writings of singers and teachers (17th to 19th century) on early vocal techniques. This made him write seven books and many articles about singing and bel canto. He taught voice in New York City for almost seventy-five years, teaching until shortly before his 97th birthday. Many of his students became famous singers and vocal teachers. He was invited to provide many master classes in North America, Europe, as well as in Japan and Australia. His teachings have an influence on the teaching of singing in North America, Europe and Asia. Some cities in Germany offer master classes 1 and 2 weeks with him for eight years. Its influence in Germany can be easily seen in the German version of Wikipedia: see article: "Gesangsregister".
Criticism
Reid and others who have written about bel canto in modern times, must have opposed the mainstream and are therefore always open to criticism. Pedro de Alcantara, a teacher of Alexander, supported both Reid and Husler/Rodd-Marling, who published Singing: Physical Properties of Vocal Organ in 1965: "Reid the free-thinking and collaborative duo Frederick Husler and Yvonne Rodd -Marling has put forward an impermeable argument for the correct causal relationships with respect to breathing and singing. They have proved very controversial, but their critics, instead of denying the points made by their authors, have used
Posts in Bel canto
Belido's first book Beligion: Principles and Practice went out in 1950 and was followed by The Voice: A Guide to Natural Singing in 1965 and Voice: Psyche and Soma , 1975. This was later reprinted by Joseph Patelson Music House in 1975 as a Trilogy. In 1977 he was awarded a grant by the Ford Foundation to compile the Vocal Terminology Dictionary - An Analysis - the only one of its kind. Several other books were published in the 1990s including the Essay on Singing and Vocal Exercises: Their Purpose and Dynamics were published in Germany. For his 90th birthday, a festschrift The Modern Singing Master: Essays in Honor of Cornelius L. Reid is published. Debra Greschner writes in the Journal of Singing : "The voice pedagogy record is filled with references to sing the masters of the bel canto era. [Edit] Editors Ariel Bybee and James E. Ford, in their choice of titles for this summary, that pedagogical tradition and pay homage to teachers they believe follow the lineage: Cornelius L. Reid Reid publications are well known to the students of serious voice pedagogy. "Some of his books have also been translated into German, Japanese and Korean.

Pedagogy
Reid's teachings are based on the famous 17th century sound books. They include Giulio Caccini, Pier Francesco Tosi, Giovanni Battista Mancini, Domenico Corri, Francesco Lamperti, Giovanni Battista Lamperti, Manuel Patricio RodrÃÆ'guez GarcÃÆ'a, Isaac Nathan and Julius Stockhausen.
At the festival, Stephen F. Austin respects Cornelius Reid and those who have studied with him: "It is only rarely that a person finds a voice teacher using a method in which the voice register is used in a way that makes a song in bel canto, the greatest era known to man, if a teacher like that was discovered, most likely he had been influenced, directly or indirectly, by one person, Cornelius Reid had made a single contribution to vocal pedagogy because he had retained the ancient tradition of teaching as established and tested in the fire of the eighteenth-century opera house living in the twentieth century - and now the 21st century. "
Summary of Reid's pedagogy appears in the Journal of Singing: Reid's approach rests on two theoretical registers and the belief that the only factors that can exert voluntary control on the unconscious laryngeal muscles are pitch, intensity and vocal. using various combinations of these three controls, in combination with the use of "functional hearing" - a careful analysis of the registration balance - will result in a free technique.
