Sometimes referred to as "90210," one of the main zip codes, it is home to many celebrities and is known internationally for luxury hotels and the Rodeo Drive shopping district.

Originally a Spanish farm where five beans were grown, Beverly Hills was founded in 1914 by a group of investors who failed to find oil, but instead found water and eventually decided to expand it into a city. By 2013, the population has risen to 34,658.

Histori

Sejarah awal

Gaspar de PortolÃÆ'¡ arrived in an area that would later become Beverly Hills on August 3, 1769, walking along the original trail that follows the current Wilshire Boulevard route.

The area was occupied by Maria Rita Quinteros de Valdez and her husband in 1828. They referred to their property of 4,500 hectares (18 km 2 ) belonging to Rancho Rodeo de las Aguas . In 1854, he sold his farm to Benjamin Davis Wilson (1811-1878) and Henry Hancock (1822-1883). In the 1880s, the farm was divided into a 75 acre package (0.30 km <2>) and was quickly bought by the anglos from Los Angeles and the East coast.

Henry Hammel and Andrew H. Denker gained the most and used it for peanut farming. At this point, the area is known as Hammel and Denker Ranch. In 1888, Denker and Hammel planned to build a city called Morocco as their own.

20th century

In 1900, Burton E. Green, Charles A. Canfield, Max Whittier, Frank H. Buck, Henry E. Huntington, William G. Kerckhoff, William F. Herrin, W.S. Porter, and Frank H. Balch, formed the Amalgamated Oil Company, bought Hammel and Denker farms, and started looking for oil. They do not find enough to exploit commercially by time standards, though. In 1906, therefore, they were reorganized as Rodeo Land and Water Company, renamed the Beverly Hills property, dividing it up, and began selling a lot. The development was named "Beverly Hills" after Beverly Farms in Beverly, Massachusetts and because of the hills in the area. The first house in the subdivision was built in 1907, although sales remained slow.

Beverly Hills is one of many white communities that started in the Los Angeles area around this time. Limited agreements prohibit whites to own or lease property unless they are employed as servants by the white population. It is also prohibited to sell or rent property to Jews in Beverly Hills.

Burton Green began construction at The Beverly Hills Hotel in 1911. The hotel was completed in 1912. Visitors attracted by the hotel tended to buy land in Beverly Hills, and in 1914 the subdivision had a population high enough to be included as an independent town. That same year, Rodeo Land and Water Company decided to separate its water business from its real estate business. Beverly Hills Utilities Commission was separated from the land company and merged in September 1914, purchased all utility related assets from Rodeo Land and Water Company.

In 1919, Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford bought land on Summit Drive and built a large house, completed in 1921 and dubbed "Pickfair" by the press. The beauty associated with Fairbanks and Pickford and other movie stars who built luxury homes in the city contributed to its ever-increasing appeal.

By the early 1920s Beverly Hills population had grown enough to make water supplies a political problem. In 1923 the usual solution, annexation to the city of Los Angeles, was proposed. There is great opposition to annexation among well-known populations such as Pickford, Fairbanks, Will Rogers and Rudolph Valentino. Beverly Hills Utilities Commission, which opposes annexation too, managed to force the city into a special election and the plan was defeated 337 to 507.

In 1925, Beverly Hills approved the issuance of bonds to buy 385 acres (1.6 km 2 ) for the new campus for UCLA. The cities of Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and Venice also issue bonds to help pay for the new campus. In 1928, the Beverly Wilshire Apartment Hotel (now Beverly Wilshire Hotel) opened on Wilshire Boulevard between El Camino and Rodeo drive, part of the old Beverly Hills Speedway. That same year, Edward Xi Doheny completed the construction of Greystone Mansion, a 55-room mansion intended as a wedding gift for his son Edward L. Doheny, Jr. The house is now owned by the city of Beverly Hills.

In the early 1930s, Santa Monica Park was renamed Beverly Gardens and expanded to reach 3 miles long Santa Monica Boulevard through the city. Electrical Fountain marks the corner of Santa Monica Blvd. and Wilshire Blvd. with a small statue on the top of Tongva that knelt in prayer. In April 1931, the newly opened Italian-style Beverly Hills Town Hall.

In the early 1940s, black actors and entrepreneurs began moving to Beverly Hills, although there was an agreement that only allowed whites to live in the city. An environmental improvement association seeks to enforce agreements in court. The defendants included characters such as Hattie McDaniel, Louise Beavers, and Ethel Waters. Among the white citizens who support the lawsuit against blacks is the silent film star Harold Lloyd. The NAACP participates in the defense, which works. In his decision, federal judge Thurmond Clarke said it was time that "members of the Negro race were granted, without reservation or evasion, full rights guaranteed to them under the 14th amendment." The United States Supreme Court declared the covenant restrictions not applicable in 1948 at Shelley v. Kraemer. A group of Beverly Hills Jews filed a brief report in this case.

In 1956, Paul Trousdale (1915-1990) bought land at Doheny Ranch and expanded it at the Trousdale Plantation, convincing the city of Beverly Hills to annex it. The environment has been home to Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Martin Dean, Tony Curtis, Ray Charles, President Richard Nixon and, more recently, Jennifer Aniston, David Spade, Vera Wang and John Rich.

In the late 1990s, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transport Authority (LACMTA) proposed to build an extension of the Red Metro Line along Wilshire Boulevard and downtown Beverly Hills, but the city opposed it.

21st century

In 2001, LACMTA later proposed a quick transit bus route to Santa Monica Blvd., but this was also opposed by the city and never built. Currently this road stretch is served by the less efficient Metro Rapid bus using pre-existing roadways. In 2010, traffic in Beverly Hills and the surrounding area has grown quite badly so that the city's habitual opposition largely turned to support for subway within the city limits. As part of the Westside Subway Extension project, the LA Metro Purple Line is planned to be extended through Beverly Hills, adding two underground stations in the Wilshire/La Cienega and the Wilshire/Rodeo by the 2020s.

In the midst of the 2015 drought, Beverly Hills is found to be one of the largest water consumers in the whole of California. As a result, they were asked by the state to reduce their consumption by 36%, prompting many residents to replace their grass with native plants. Meanwhile, the city government replaced the grass in front of City Hall with the Mexican sage.

In September 2015, the City of Beverly Hills signed an agreement with the State of Israel to work together on water use as well as "cybersecurity, public health, emergency services, disaster preparedness, public safety, counterterrorism and art and culture".

In July 2016, the City of Beverly Hills received a Living Eligible Award from the United States Conference of Mayors for its Ambassador Program, which handles homeless populations in the city.

The Beverly Hills Dogs Community Park is dedicated on September 6, 2016.

In November 2016, the Beverly Hills City Council issued a resolution to condemn the decision made by UNESCO to deny Jewish Temple history and Western Walls in Jerusalem, Israel.

Geography

Beverly Hills and the neighboring city of West Hollywood are entirely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles. In particular, Beverly Hills is bordered to the northwest by the Bel-Air neighborhood in Los Angeles and the Santa Monica Mountains, to the east by West Hollywood, the Carthay neighborhood of Los Angeles, and the Fairfax District in Los Angeles, and to the south. by the Beverlywood neighborhood of Los Angeles. The "Platinum Triangle" area was formed by the city of Beverly Hills and the neighborhood of Bel Air and Holmby Hills in Los Angeles.

Regardless of the name of the city, most of the population lives on the "plain" of Beverly Hills, which is a relatively flat ground sloping toward the hills, and covers all of Beverly Hills itself. The houses located on the north side of Sunset Boulevard hill have a much higher value than the average housing price for the rest of the city. Santa Monica Boulevard divides the "flats" into two areas, locally known as "North or South of the tracks," referring to the railroads used by the old Pacific Tramway line that runs through Beverly Hills along Santa Monica Blvd. The houses south of Wilshire Boulevard have many town squares and many rectangles, generally smaller than those in the north. There are also more apartment buildings south of Wilshire Blvd. from elsewhere in Beverly Hills, and the average home value in the south of Wilshire is the lowest in Beverly Hills. Almost all businesses and government offices in Beverly Hills are located south of Santa Monica Blvd. The two exceptions are the Beverly Hills Hotel and the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Just outside the city limits to the west is the Los Angeles Country Club. Other locations commonly associated with Beverly Hills include Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Beverly Center, just outside the city limits on the east.

Beverly Hills Post Office is an area in Los Angeles where Beverly Hills Post Office serves and carries the mailing address "Beverly Hills, CA 90210". The other four, less celebrated ZIP codes for Beverly Hills are: 90209, 90211, 90212 and 90213.

Together with the Los Angeles community of Bel-Air and Brentwood, this is one of the "Three B", rich areas of Westside Los Angeles.
