An adult diaper (or adult diaper ) is a diaper made for use by a person with a larger body than a baby or toddler. Diapers can be needed for adults with various conditions, such as incontinence, mobility impairment, severe diarrhea or dementia. Adult diapers are made in various forms, including those resembling traditional child diapers, panties, and pads that resemble a sanitary napkin (known as incontinence pads).

In the medical community, professionals are trained to use alternative terms such as "brief" rather than "diapers" for self-esteem, since the term "diaper" is associated with children and therefore may have a negative connotation. But in practice, most health workers are accustomed to calling them diapers, especially those that resemble children's diapers.

Usage

Health care

People with medical conditions that cause them to have urinary or fecal incontinence often require diapers or similar products because they can not control their bladder or intestines. People lying in bed or in wheelchairs, including those with good bowel and bladder control, can also wear diapers because they can not access toilets independently. Those with cognitive impairment, such as dementia, may require diapers because they may not recognize their need to reach the toilet.

The absorbent incontinence products come in various types (drip collectors, pads, underwear and adult diapers), each with different capacities and sizes. The largest volume of consumed products falls into the low absorbency range of products, and even when it comes to adult diapers, the cheapest and least absorbent brands are used the most. This is not because people choose to use the most inexpensive and less absorbent brands, but rather because medical facilities are the biggest consumers of adult diapers, and they have a requirement to change patients as often as every two hours. Thus, they choose products that meet their changing needs, rather than products that can be used longer or more comfortably.

Special diapers are needed for swimming or pool therapy. This is known as swimming swimsuit or detention shorts. They are intended primarily for fecal incontinence, but they can also be useful for temporary urine containment, to maintain dignity while transferring from the dressing room to the pool. Manufacturers like Discovery Trekking, Splash About, and Theraquatics generally use stretch fabrics to allow for greater adjustment for convenient comfort. They can be washed and reused. No adult diapers to swim.

Astronaut

Astronauts wear a trunklike diaper called "Maximum Absorbency Garments", or MAGS, when taking off and landing. On a space shuttle mission, each crew member receives three diapers - for launch, re-entry and backup in case of re-entry should be removed and tried later. Super-absorbent fabrics used in disposable diapers, which can hold up to 400 times the weight, are developed so that Apollo astronauts can remain in outer space and extra-vehicle activity for at least six hours. Initially, only female astronauts will wear Maximum Absorbensi Clothing, because the collection devices used by men are not suitable for women; However, reports of their comfort and effectiveness eventually convince men to start wearing diapers as well. Public awareness about astronaut diapers increased significantly after the arrest of Lisa Nowak, a NASA astronaut accused of attempted murder, who became famous in the media when police reported that he had traveled 900 miles, with an adult diaper so he did not have to stop to urinate. Diapers are food for many television comedians, and are included in the story adaptation in Law & amp; Order: Criminal Intent , regardless of Nowak's rejection that he's wearing it.

Fetishism and infantilism

Diapers can also be worn by infantile and diaper fetishists for comfort, sexual satisfaction, for style, or for emotional reasons.

More

Other situations where diapers are used because access to toilets are not available or are not allowed longer than even a normal bladder can survive including;

  • Carers who must remain on duty and not allowed to leave their posts; this is sometimes called "guard urine".
  • It has long been proposed that legislators wear diapers before a long filibuster, so often so jokingly it is called "taking a diaper." There is already at least one example, where Strom Thurmond gives a 24-hour recording and 18-minute speech.
  • Several death row inmates who will be executed use "execution diapers" to extract body fluids expelled during and after their deaths.
  • People who dive in wetsuits (in the past often wear a standard diving gown) can wear diapers because they are under water continuously for several hours.
  • Similarly, pilots can wear on long flights.
  • In 2003, Hazard Magazine reported that workers in various industries use diapers because their bosses refuse to rest the toilet during work hours. One woman said that she had to spend 10% of her salary on incontinence pads for this reason.
  • Chinese media reported in 2006 that diapers are a popular way to avoid long lines for toilets on trains during the Lunar New Year holiday season.
  • In Germany, younger patients in drunken coma are placed in hospital diapers.

Adult diaper market in Japan is growing. On September 25, 2008, Japanese adult diaper producers held the world's first all-popper fashion exhibition, dramatizing all the informative dramatic scenarios that address issues relevant to parents in diapers. "It's great to see so many types of diapers in one show," says Aya Habuka, 26. "I learned a lot - this is the first time a diaper is considered a fashion."

In May 2010, the Japanese adult diaper market was expanded to be used as an alternative fuel source. The used diapers are damaged, dried, and sterilized to be converted into fuel pellets for boilers. The number of fuel pellets for 1/3 of the original weight and contains about 5,000 kcal of heat per kilogram.

In September 2012, Japanese magazine SPA! describes the trend of wearing diapers among Japanese women.

Some believe diapers are a better alternative to using toilets. According to Dr Dipak Chatterjee of the Mumbai newspaper Daily News and Analysis, public toilet facilities are so unhygienic that they are actually safer for people - especially women - who are susceptible to infections to use adult diapers instead. Seann Odoms of Men's Health magazine believes that wearing diapers can help people of all ages to maintain healthy bowel function. She herself admits wearing a full-time diaper for this recognized health benefit. "Diapers," he says, "are nothing more than a more practical and healthy form of clothing, they are a safe and healthy way of life." Writer Paul Davidson argues that it should be socially acceptable for everyone to wear diapers permanently, claiming that they give freedom and remove the hassle of not having to go to the toilet, just as social progress has offered a solution to other complications. He writes, "Make parents end up feeling hailed instead of ridiculed and remove the temptations of teenage equations that affect so many children in a negative way. Give everyone in this world an opportunity to live, learn, grow and urinate anywhere and anytime. without public pressure to "refrain." "

Dignity issues

The use of adult diapers can be a source of shame, and products are often marketed under euphemisms such as incontinence pads.

In 2006, seventeen students taking the geriatric pharmacotherapy course participated in a volunteer "diapers" exercise to help them understand the impact of incontinence on older adults. Students, who wear adult diapers a day before writing a paper about it, describe the experience as alien and physically challenging, noting that being in diapers has a very negative impact on them and that a better solution for incontinence is needed. However, they praise the practice for giving them insight into incontinence and its impact on people's lives.

In 2008, Ontario Health Minister George Smitherman revealed that he is considering using his own adult diapers to test their absorption following complaints that nursing home residents are forced to stay in diapers that remain unchanged for days at a time. Smitherman's proposal led him to criticism from unions who argued that priority was not the capacity of diapers but a lack of staff that affected how often they were changed, and he later apologized.
