How Clean is Your House? is a British entertainment/lifestyle television program where cleaning experts Kim Woodburn and Aggie MacKenzie visit very dirty homes and clean it up. The thirty minute show was produced by Talkback Thames, the British production section of FremantleMedia (part of the RTL Group), and broadcasted on Channel 4 from 2003 to 2009. Despite its successful ranking, Channel 4 announced that they had decided to cancel the series in 2009 to give the way for new programming.

Format

Each program episode follows the same formula. Accompanied by dramatic horror movie music, Kim and Aggie explored their own quarters, examining the extent of the chaos and searching for such an awful area. Kim and Aggie then meet with the residents before the cleaning begins, aided by some professional cleaners. During this process, which takes most of the show, Kim and Aggie share tips for handling specific cleaning tasks with occupants, often relying on traditional solutions rather than exclusive commercial cleaning products.

During cleaning, Aggie takes swab samples from the dirtiest areas of the home and has analyzed them in the laboratory, often revealing different types of bacteria, often E. coli or Salmonella . The inhabitants of the house often have health problems that are directly derived from air quality or existing pathogens prior to cleaning; Aggie will show the residents their findings in an effort to make them understand the relationship between their health and the condition of their homes.

The last part of the show was Aggie and Kim opened a newly cleaned house for the residents. In the previous episode, Kim and Aggie will return home a few weeks later to see if cleaning is being maintained.

This show makes the point of cleaning the carpets and furniture the residents possess, and not replacing the dirty or worn out items just to reveal the end. In some cases where a resident does not have basic furniture (such as a person who may be sleeping on a mattress on the floor rather than a bed), Aggie and Kim may coordinate with neighbors or local junk shops to donate goods.

Kim takes on the role of a woman who dominates, scolding the population for letting their house get so bad. She sometimes flirts with the male population. In contrast, Aggie (whose previous job includes associate editor at Good Housekeeping and working for MI6) assumes a more serious role of "dirt detective", performing tasks such as bacterial analysis. She plays more sick than Kim, claiming that she'll get sick or run away from a terrible home. While cleaning, both Kim and Aggie wear industrial white clothing and rubber gloves adorned with marabou fur and fake gemstones. This duo has become famous in the UK, as far as they (and often the program itself) are almost always referred to as just Kim and Aggie.

Actor Paul Copley provides a voice-in-cheek narrative, often a narrative alliteration for each episode. The show is light and often camped, falling into the entertainment category versus the factual genre. Much of the appeal comes from the voyeuristic pleasure of seeing how untidy some people let their homes become (many have not been cleaned for years) and reactions from two star performances, although cleaning tips add some practical value to the show.

End series

The sixth and last series that aired in the UK on Channel 4 from August 13 to September 24, 2009, and (for the first time) are also broadcast in High Definition on Channel 4 HD. Especially the same format as the previous edition, Kim and Aggie continue to search for "the dirtiest house in the UK"; however, the program is promoted as digging deeper into the soul of the homeowner. In addition, a two-week "check-up" is removed from the event formula, but Kim and Aggie perform a road show appearance in every episode where they will meet community members to answer questions and offer cleaning tips.

In November 2009, Channel 4 announced that it had decided to end the series after six years as part of an ongoing "creative renewal" for programming. Channel 4 program leader Julian Bellamy says the series has been one of several "major attacks" for the channel, but the focus now is "discovering a new generation of innovative events".
