Histori
The mansion was built in 1914 for Reverend Harwood Huntington of New Haven, Connecticut. It's named for the many windows of shutters that are incorporated into the building's design, which helps keep the interior cool despite Florida's subtropical climate.
Rockefeller Era
His most famous resident, John D. Rockefeller, bought the house as his winter residence in 1918. Rockefeller was seventy-eight years old when he moved to Casements. He is known in the area for his elaborate Christmas party, his love of golf, and to distribute coins to neighbors or visitors. During a golf game with Harvey Firestone, the tire king makes a good shot so Rockefeller decides he deserves a dime and hands it over to his rather embarrassed guest.
Over the years, Rockefeller was visited in The Casements by figures such as Edward, Prince of Wales, Henry Ford, and Will Rogers, who once quipped, "I'm glad you won (in golf) today, Mr. Rockefeller. You are lost, the price of gasoline goes up! "
Guests at The Casements received a poem along with their new change. This poem is believed to have been written by Rockefeller:
I was taught early to work and play; My life is a day long and fun - Full of work and full of games - I forget it, And God is good to me every day.
It was here that Rockefeller finally died in his sleep on the morning of May 23, 1937. The Rockefellers sold The Casements in 1941.
Next history
Over the next 20 years, The Casements served as a girls' prep school and home for the elderly. In 1959, the property was purchased by the Ormond Corporation Hotel with a development plan, but the plan never materialized. In 1972, The Casements was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The following year, it was bought by the city of Ormond Beach, which was finally restored to serve as a cultural and community center.
In 2009, Casements underwent a $ 1.1 million renovation project.
