Oral dental sedation is a medical procedure that involves administration of oral tranquilizers, generally to facilitate dental procedures and reduce patient fears and anxiety related to experience. Oral sedation is one of the available methods of conscious dentifrice sedation, along with inhaled sedation (nitrous oxide) and conscious intravenous sedation. Drugs that can be used for sedation include diazepam, triazolam, zaleplon, lorazepam, and hydroxyzine.

Usage
Dental patients with generalized anxiety, belonephobia (fear of needles and sharp instruments), previous tooth traumas, or general dentist fears can take oral medications to reduce their anxiety. Single and incremental dose protocols are used to treat patients as early as the day before treatment. Additional drugs help reduce memory or the sights and smells of the dental office to avoid remembering any trauma. The sedative effect allows more dentists to finish fewer appointments and allows complicated procedures to be performed in less time.

Drugs
- Valium (Diazepam) is the best known drug in the group. It's been around since the 1960s and is a well-known and time-tested sedative with amnesic properties. Valium has a longer half-life than some other drugs, making it very useful for appointments where the dentist is being performed.
- Halcion (Triazolam) is best known for the treatment of insomnia. This is very effective when used in oral sedation protocols, and if deemed appropriate by your dentist, can be used in conjunction with antihistamines.
- Sonata (Zaleplon) is similar to Halcion in that it is also commonly used for the treatment of insomnia.
- Ativan (Lorazepam) is usually prescribed for anxiety treatments. It has many of the desired effects of other benzodiazepines with amnesic properties. It is an effective sedative with mid-life time and is useful for appointments longer than two hours.
- Vistaril (Hydroxyzine) while classified as an antihistamine has also been shown to have an anatolytic (anti-anxiety) effect. It also works along with many benzodiazepines but has no amnesic properties.
- Versed (Midazolam) has the shortest half-life of all benzodiazepines, which lasts about an hour, and makes it ideal for short appointments or simple procedures. It has many of the same anxiolytic and amnesia benefits of other benzodiazepines, but is less commonly used because of its duration.
Risk mitigation
The characteristics of the drug should be considered carefully when choosing the right drug. Suitable factors, such as where the drug is metabolized and the underlying disease requires a good medical history and a thorough knowledge of the characteristics of the drug. All risk factors, individual characteristics, and procedural complexity can be taken into account to provide the best drug choice.
Education
Courses in Oral Sedation Dentistry are offered in North America in various dental schools and private organizations. The largest nonprofit toothcare provider to continue education in North America is the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation. Special courses are taught in pediatric sedation, ACLS, IV Sedation and emergency preparedness. The largest nonprofit organization that provides educational courses in oral sedation as well as IV sedation and general anesthesia is the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology.
Rule
Education and training requirements for managing sedation vary by country. ADA has set general guidelines for sedation that have been adopted or modified by many countries. There is usually a dose limitation involved with anxiolysis, usually one dose of treatment day does not exceed the recommended maximum dose (MRD) of the drug to achieve the desired level of sedation. However, this sedation law varies from state to state. The anxiolysis protocol is designed to treat ASA I & amp; Patients II are 18 years of age or older for one to four hours of treatment. Some states now require permission even for the administration and/or anitis of nitrous oxide.
