Negril is a small but widespread (6,900) seaside resort town located throughout part of two Jamaican parishes, Westmoreland and Hanover.

Negril is about an hour and fifteen minutes' drive on the coastal highway from Sir Donald Sangster International Airport, in Montego Bay. Westmoreland is the most western parish in Jamaica, located on the south side of the island. Downtown Negril, the western edge of the resort south of the city center, and the southern part of the so-called "seven-mile (11 km)" beach are in Westmoreland. The northernmost resort on the beach is in Hanover Parish. The nearest major city is Savanna-la-Mar, the capital of Westmoreland Parish.

Histori

The name Negril is a shortened version of Negrillo (Spanish: Little black ), since it was originally named by Spanish in 1494. The name is considered by some as a reference to the black cliffs in the south of the village. Another theory suggests that because there is a large population of black eels along the Negril coast, the Spaniards call the area Anguila Negra shortened to Negrillo and then to Negril Although Negril has a long history, it did not become famous until the second half of the twentieth century.

The development of Negril as a resort location began in the late 1950s, although access to the area proved difficult as ferries were asked to drop passengers in Negril Bay, forcing them to cross to the coast. Most tourists will rent rooms inside the Jamaican family's house, or put a tent in their yard. Daniel Connell was the first to create a more traditional holiday inn for these "flowering children" when he built his first guest house in Negril - Palm Grove. Friendly and eco-friendly reputation grew over time and the first of many resorts built in the mid to late 1960s. The first hotel in Negril is the Yacht Club by Mary's Bay in West End.

When the road between Montego Bay and Negril increased in the early 1970s, it helped improve the status of Negril as a new resort location. It is a two-lane paved road that runs about 100 meters (91 m) of land from two white coral sand beaches, at the southern tip of a small village. The long paved road from the village flows north to Green Island, home to many Jamaican workers in Negril, and quite straightforward to be doubled as a runway for small planes, which is why there are long railroad tracks standing at the end along the side of the road - to prevent drug traffickers stoned from the landing on the road to pick up the cheap marijuana charge.

After the infrastructure of Negril expanded - anticipating the growth of the resort and the growing population, the small airport, Negril Aerodrome, was built in 1976 near Rutland Point, in addition to several small hotels that mostly cater to winter travelers in North America. The Europeans also came to Negril, and several hotels were built to serve guests directly.

Geography and ecology

Geography of Jamaica is diverse. The west coastline contains the best beaches on the island, stretching over 6 km (3.7 m) along the sand dune in Negril. It is sometimes known among tourists as the "7-Mile Beach" though only slightly over 4Ã, mi (6.4 km) in length, from the Negril River in the south to Rutland Point in the north.

On the inland side of Negril's main road, east of the coast, is a marsh called the Great Morass, which passes through the Negril River. In Great Morass is the Royal Palm Reserve, with wetlands and protected forests.

In 1990, the Negril Reef Conservation Society was established as a non-profit and non-governmental organization to address the ongoing degradation of coral reef ecosystems. The Negril Marine Park was officially declared on 4 March 1998 with a total area of approximately 160 km 2 (62 m²) and stretched from Davis Cove River in Parish of Hanover to St. Louis. John's Point in Westmoreland.

Scuba diving and snorkeling are excellent in the protected reef areas.

The West End Road is also known as Lighthouse Road because there is a Belgian engineered lighthouse that protects the sailors from a dramatic cliff. There is a great view on the western end of Negril, near Negril Lighthouse. You can hang out with locals in beer huts like Sexy Rexy's and the others "out of the West".
