Mandel was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to a Jewish family. Her mother, Rose, along with her brothers, Meriam, Jack, and Joseph, immigrated from Galicia to the United States on June 19, 1920, with the help of the Red Cross. Morton's father, Simon, had immigrated from Nowy Sancz, Poland (near Krakow) to the United States in 1913, planning to bring his family after he became established in Ohio.

Morton was born 15 months after his mother's immigration, in Cleveland, where his parents run a dry goods store. The family then moved several times because they could not afford to pay their monthly rent. Growing up, Mandel shared a room with his two brothers, dressed in secondhand items, and had little money. However, despite their economic difficulties, Mandel's mother often gave her little to do charity. His family continued the Jewish tradition when in the United States, sending the young Mandel to the Hebrew school in the afternoon.

After the bar mitzvah, at the age of 13, he started working after school selling hot dogs, drinks, nuts, and popcorn at Cleveland Municipal Stadium. Mandel's father suffered from multiple sclerosis, and when his illness developed, he had to be treated by his wife. Eventually he lay in bed and his wife became the sole provider for the family, selling clothes from suitcases on the streets of Cleveland. After graduating from high school, Mandel attended a chemistry program at Adelbert College, but quit in his second year to join the automotive parts store he and his brothers had purchased from their uncle Jacob Mandel.

Careers

Initial work

In the spring of 1940, Mandel's uncle Jacob Mandel decided to leave Cleveland to Chicago, and offered to sell his car repair shop to Mandel's brother, Jack. Jack gathers his two brothers, Joe, who sells soap, and Morton, who works in the shop after school, and opens their first business. They spent their $ 900 savings to buy it and also received a $ 3,000 loan for supplies from their uncle, Conrad Mandel. On August 1, 1940, they opened the Premier Automotive Supply Company, which sells auto parts.

Military services

In 1943, Morton was recruited by the US Army to fight in World War II. A few months after he signed up, the Army sent him and thousands more back to school, fearing the shortage of wartime engineers. Mandel spent two years as a student for the Army, first at Pomona College in Claremont, California, and then at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1946, once the war was over, Mandel, now a Lieutenant 2, was sent back to Cleveland.

During his stint in World War II, Mandel was assigned to transport fifteen wounded American soldiers from an army hospital in Memphis to another hospital in the south. Along the way, the entourage stopped for lunch. The African American troops in the group were denied entry into the restaurant, one where German prisoners of war were being served. Angered by this act of racism, Mandel took the group away from the restaurant, where they could pay with meal vouchers, and bought them sandwiches from a street vendor.

Premier Industry Company

In 1945, after Mandel returned from service, he returned to his family business with Joe, who had also returned from work in a war factory, and Jack, who continued to run his business during the service of his brothers. Upon returning, Mandel acts as general manager of the company and handles business management. Originally an automotive parts distributor, Premier Automotive was founded as Premier Autoware in 1946. Shortly after that, the brothers realized that their share was also sold by many other distributors, and that the profit margins they generated were barely enough to live. After months of asking their customers what parts they need, they form lists of "hard to find" parts, and find sources to buy them. They then sell the "hard earned" parts, and as a result, their sales are increasing with great demand and their business is starting to grow.

The brothers also set up their business around the principles of customer service, using slogans such as "Killing Yourself for Your Customers", "Always Trying to Raise the Bar", and "Focus on Our People". In fulfilling this objective, they hire an engineer who is responsible for helping and understanding the needs of their customers. Then, they build a 24-hour customer service department, including holidays and weekends, answering and addressing clients' needs. An example of this service is when a trip at Walt Disney World is damaged on Saturday and the company has the necessary parts sent within a few hours of the same day.

They then acquired the electronic supply division, which led the company to expand its scope and business. In 1955, Mandel hired Bob Warren, who helped change the company, and in 1972 became President. In May 1960 the company changed its name to the Premier Industrial Company, and Mandel launched its initial public offering, with his siblings retaining 70% of the ownership. Four years later, the company was listed on the NYSE. This allows the company to acquire more than a dozen industrial and electronic spare parts companies. The purchase of Newark Electronics, in 1968, significantly expanded the company's reach into the electronic component business. In addition to specializing in the distribution of electronic equipment, maintenance products and fire-fighting equipment, Premier Industrial Corporation also markets a wide range of products including lubricants, welding equipment, and fasteners to over 100,000 customers worldwide.

In the late 1960s, Mandel began working in the Cleveland business community, serving as Director of Central National Bank of Cleveland and Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. until 1979, when he left them to focus on philanthropic activities. When Premier Industrial Corporation grew, Mandel met every month with Peter Drucker, who consulted on various matters concerning the company.

In the 1970s, Premier Industrial Corporation began operations in Europe, and in 1977, the company has opened a company's research and development center, where the company adapts its products to customer needs. In 1984, the company had 18 divisions, with electronics accounting for half of the $ 465 million in sales, and the company generated a net profit of $ 48 million. It later became one of the largest distributors of US electronic parts and components. During his stay at the Palm Beach Country Club, Mandel met with Bernard Madoff, and although most of his advisers liked the investment in Madoff funds, Mandel refused because of Madoff's lack of transparency. Premier Industrial Corporation earned numerous business awards, including being one of the top 50 companies profiled in 1995, Making It in America.

In 1996, when Premier Industrial Corporation had 16 different divisions and was worth nearly $ 3 billion, merged with the British company Farnell Electronics PLC to form Premier Farnell PLC, one of the world's largest suppliers of industrial and electronic components. Mandel served as Vice Chairman of Premier Farnell until 2002.

During Mandel's 36 years as Chairman of the Premier Industry Company, the company has 34 years ended in profit growth and within 30 years of it, net profit after tax, more than 10% of its business operations.

Israel

Mandel's first business engagement in Israel took place in 2003, when Parkwood Corporation, a private investment firm Mandel Brothers, founded Israel Equity Limited (IEL). Mandel serves as Chairman of this company. IEL is an investment company that aims to contribute to the Israeli industrial sector by purchasing industrial companies and improving the management and results of their business. IEL has acquired and invested in Tadbik Group, Bikur Rofe, and Phenicia Glass Works Ltd. This investment totally employs more than 800 workers.

Mandel invests in the hi-tech sector, and has investments in this field. His first investment was Medivent, the second hi-tech company in Israel. In 2011, Mandel was one of Pontifax's first investors, focusing on investments in biological sciences companies.
