Concept and construction
The tower was built between 1968 and 1972 and was ready in time for the 1972 Summer Olympics. The inauguration was followed on May 18, 1973. The 101 meters (331 feet) building is located near the Olympic Village and is often referred to as one of Munich's most famous architectural examples. The tower exterior is supposed to mimic a four-cylinder shape in a car engine, with the museum representing the cylinder head. Both buildings were designed by Austrian architect Karl Schwanzer.
The main tower consists of four vertical cylinders that stand beside and opposite each other. Each cylinder is divided horizontally at its center with a mold on the facade. In particular, this cylinder does not stand on the ground; they are suspended in central support towers. During construction, each floor is assembled on the ground and then elevated. The tower has a diameter of 52.30 meters (171.6 feet) and has 22 floors occupied, two of which are basements and 18 serve as office space.

Popular culture
During the 1972 Summer Olympics, BMW brands were moved from buildings to prevent product placement. BMW badging was also removed from the 2002 sedan, which accompanied the Olympic marathon runners during the competition. The imagery was deleted again for a cameo appearance in the 1975 Rollerball film, replaced by a large orange circle, intended to stand up to the fictional Energy Company in power in the future.
The building also appeared in the 1977 horror film Suspiria .
BMW Campus
The BMW Museum is located right next to the tower while BMW Welt, which features the current BMW car and acts as a distribution center, opens on the opposite side of the road on October 17, 2007.
