The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is an all-breed conformation event that has been held in New York City every year since 1877. Currently, the breed and Junior Showmanship competitions are held in Piers 92 and 94, while groups and competitions Best in Show was held at Madison Square Garden. The number of entries is huge at almost 3000 so two days is required for all dogs to be assessed.

The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is one of the few benched events in the United States. Dogs are requested to be displayed at a designated location (bench) during the entire show except when displayed on a ring, prepared for display, or taken outside to be removed, so that the audience and ranchers have a chance to see all the dogs coming in. (At more general performances without a player, the dog must be present only at the specified ringing time.)

Histori

The Westminster show was first held on May 8, 1877, making it the longest longest running sport event in the United States behind only Kentucky Derby, which was first held in 1875. (Both events were held even during World War years. ) The show started as a show for the armed dogs, especially Setters and Pointer, initiated by a group of hunters who meet regularly at Westminster Hotel in Irving Place and Sixteenth Street in Manhattan. They decided to create a kennel club called the Westminster Kennel Club specifically for the purpose of holding a dog show. The prizes for this first show include items such as pearls handled by pistols, useful for hunters and terriermens who work with these dogs in the field.

Held at Gilmore Park (Madison Square Garden), the Westminster show attracted over 1200 dogs and proved so popular that the three days are scheduled to be extended to four, with the club donating the proceeds from the fourth day to the ASPCA for the creation of a home to get lost and a handicapped dog.

Westminster Kennel Club preceded the establishment of the American Kennel Club for seven years, and became the first club accepted by AKC after the establishment of AKC in 1884. The breeding clubs breed (for example, Hound Club of America Afghanistan) created a standard for assessing their breeds, with AKC set rules on performance and judgment.

Dogs are judged on the basis of their breed standards, to see how close each dog is to the standard, which is a written description of the ideal specimen of the breed. Standards may include form-related references to work in the performance of a dog-reared job, and may also include somewhat arbitrary items such as color, eye shape, tail carts and more. While many breeds no longer need to do their original work and are mostly raised for friendship, they must still have innate ability and physical make-up to do the job, and this is what the judge seeks.

Due to space considerations at Madison Square Garden, entries are limited to 2,800 dogs and judging breeds performed during the day at Piers 92 and 94. Groups and Best in Show judging take place at night at Madison Square Garden. Entries are filled in immediately on the first day of entry. Since 1992, the club has invited the top five dogs in each breed to be pre-entered (determined by the number of dogs defeated at the show over the previous year) to ensure that all top dogs have a chance to compete.

Today, Westminster runs for two days and nights every February. During the day, dogs compete at the breed level (ie, against other dogs of the same breed). Each Best Breed (BOB) winner progresses to their respective groups, of which there are seven (Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting, and Herding). Group competitions are held at night, and seven group winners advance to the final competition, in which one of the judges will choose one of them as Best In Show winners. Since 2014, the event allows breeding breeding dogs to compete in agility events.

Competition in Junior Showmanship (for handlers age 9-18) has been held since 1934. The eight finalists all received scholarships for post-secondary schools. In addition, every year the club (through the Westminster Kennel Foundation) provides a veterinary school scholarship for students from six schools.

The winning dog becomes "American Dog" for the following year. It started his reign with a media tour on the day after the show with performances on virtually any TV network morning show, visits to the Observation Deck at the Empire State Building, and more.

The event is embraced in New York City every February, with respect from world-renowned partners such as the Empire State Building, who lights the towers in purple and gold (Westminster colors) during the show; Saks 5th Avenue, which features a street window with a Westminster themed look; and the New York Stock Exchange, which invited the winner to ring the opening bell after a big win.

Controversy

Animal rights advocates like PETA routinely protest the show, arguing that the propagation and celebration of the pure race ultimately add to the millions of dogs that end in and die in shelters. AKC regards dogs as belonging and has lobbied against a mandatory spay-and-neuter program, referring to laws such as "anti-dog."

Announcers

Show broadcaster

Over the years, Roger A. Caras is known as "The Voice of Westminster" to provide a narrative for the breed's description during the show.

In 2001, Michael J. LaFave was named the announcer at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. He was replaced by Jim Fagan in 2010, but returned in 2011.

Television

CBS Sports covered the show from the late 1960s to the 1980s as part of its antiretrobetic anthology series CBS Sports Spectacular.

From 1984 to 2003, the Universal USA Network broadcasted the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. After Universal's acquisition by General Electric in 2003 to form NBC Universal, from 2004 to 2016, it was produced under the auspices of NBC Sports. From 2006 to 2016, coverage Monday was broadcast by CNBC due to conflict with WWE Raw in the US. On July 28, 2015, it was announced that Fox Sports had acquired the rights to the event under a 10-year agreement beginning in 2017. Coverage is shared between Fox Sports 1 and Nat Geo Wild.

During the coverage of NBC from 1990 to 2016, David Frei hosted events with partners, Al Trautwig (1990-1991, 1993), Bud Collins (1992), Joe Garagiola (1994-2002), Mark McEwen (2003-2004) Lester Holt (2005, 2007-2008), Debbye Turner (2006), Mary Carillo (2009, 2011-2016), and Tamron Hall (2010).

Frei commented on the 140th event for the last time. According to a report in the New York Times, the Westminster Kennel Club will not allow Frei to announce their annual event, as well as announce the Kennel Club of Philadelphia National Dog Show, which airs on Thanksgiving Day at NBC, as Westminister left NBC for Fox began in 2017.

The 2017 event marks the start of the Fox Sports contract. Chris Myers and Westminster Communications Director Gail Miller Bisher hosted primetime coverage on Fox Sports 1. Justin Kutcher hosted a daytime breed in National Geographic Wild, originally in 2017 with Paula Nykiel and Jason Hoke. For 2018, Fox changed both booths. Kutcher remains the host for daytime assessments with Kimberly Meredith Cavanna and Don Sturz, while Hoke moves into primetime coverage to join Myers and Bisher as a three-person booth.

Fox also added an hour-long documentary that airs in April, crowned: In the Westminster Dog Show, featuring various dogs, handlers, and their owners as they go through a dog show from a few days previous. to the dog show itself. It has been produced in both of Fox's contract years.

Requirements for logging in

In 1884, AKC began requiring that all dog participants be registered with AKC and recognized for conformational performance competitions. By 2016, there are 199 breeds and varieties qualified for Westminster. Due to the popularity and prestige of the event, starting in 1992, AKC entries were limited by requiring that dogs should have earned their breed championship before appearing in Westminster. Then, the rules were altered to require the dog to have one of the two major wins required for their championship title, but no need to be a champion to enter.

The top five dogs in each breed (based on the breed points obtained in the AKC conformation that showed up to October 31 of the previous year), as well as the Best of Breed winners from each of the national breed special events, received the invitations printed by mail and qualified for the initial entry. After the initial entry time limit, another dog with at least one big win can enter, up to a total of 2800 dogs, in which point entry is closed.

There are no restrictions on winners competing again in future Westminster performances. In fact, seven dogs have won several Westminster championships: six dogs in successive years (including Warren Remedy, the only three-time champion of the event) and one dog in years not consecutive. Since 1972, however, there have been no recurring winners. (See List of Best in Show Winners from Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.)

Dogs from all breeds, including mutts, can participate in an agility show competition. Mutt's highest ranking in the competition was awarded, "All American Dog."
