History
Originally located on 28th Street and Marina, the restaurant got its start when the owner Bob Roubian was offered the opportunity to take over the local fish market in August 1951. Roubian, a carpenter with trade, has helped remodel the market three years earlier and has an interest in fishing.
The outside of the restaurant is painted a bright red. Inside the restaurant, the decor is pastiche of unique items ranging from paintings by renowned artists, theater chandeliers, pots and pans, wrought iron gates, marine equipment - and giant sharks. This restaurant is known for its relaxed atmosphere. While local favorites, tourists from all over the world visit to taste the cuisine and send one of their postcards, eat from paper plates, and see the iconic fish sign. It is not uncommon to see visitors waiting in a line crawling on the streets. These lines once lifted The Crab Cooker into national headlines when the main staff for then President Richard Nixon once asked Mr. Roubian to allow the president to sit down for dinner, and Mr. Roubian told them that the president had to wait along with the rest of the people (he said any president would get the same treatment).
In the popular show The O.C., the restaurant nicknamed Crab Shack is actually The Crab Cooker. However, in one episode, Julie Cooper (Melinda Clarke) refers to a restaurant by its original name.
The 1,700 square foot restaurant (157.9 m 2 ) is now united with a 9,000 square foot (836.1 m 2 ) pavilion next door. In 1992 the second restaurant opened in Tustin, California.
