The Ocean Forest Hotel is one of the first major hotels in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, USA. The Ocean Forest and the adjacent Ocean Forest Country Club and Golf Course are the vision of John T. Woodside, a textile king from Greenville, South Carolina. The Woodside Company bought 65,000 acres (260,000,000 m 2 ) from Myrtle Beach Farms Company, which includes land for hotels along the oceanfront. Woodside completed the golf course and country club in 1928, and turned its attention to building a hotel caterer for upscale customers.
Designed by Raymond Hood, the Rockefeller Center architect of New York, Ocean Forest was completed and officially opened on February 21, 1930. It costs about $ 1 million to build, and features a ten-story main tower with two five-floor wings. This hotel is different from all the hotels in Myrtle Beach, with many ornate features such as marble columns, crystal chandeliers, large ballrooms and elevators. The hotel property includes 13 acres (53,000 m 2 ) including gardens, stables and a swimming pool. He stood by the beach near Porcher Drive today.
Upon completion, Woodside was unable to make any mortgage payments, having lost most of his fortune during the stock market crash of 1929. The hotel, country club and surrounding property were all taken over by Woodside Bank, Iselin and the New York Company, and remained in their hands for several years. A group of independent investors bought hotels and country clubs, but much of the land was eventually taken over by Myrtle Beach Farms Company.
After World War II, the hotel did not receive the required maintenance and maintenance and eventually closed in the early 1970s. The hotel exploded in September 1974 to pave the way for a luxury condo complex. Just a roundabout that still exists to this day where the entrance to the hotel once stood with expansive streets leading to the current Pine Lakes Country Club, the former Ocean Forest Country Club and Golf Course.
