Controversy
In July 2007, the California Attorney General threatened to file a lawsuit against Corinthian Colleges, the parent company of the National Institute of Technology, unless they resolved allegations that it had misrepresented placement statistics; schools have been investigated by the state attorney general's office for more than 18 months. According to a case filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Corinthian Colleges "engages in a pattern of persistent violating behavior" by exaggerating the percentage of those who get a job from the program, improving information on starting salaries and making misleading or false statements about the program allowed to be offered and approved by the California Department of Education. The lawsuit states that "Corinthian's personal records show that most students do not complete the program and, from those who complete the program, most do not manage to get a job within six months of completing the course." At the end of July, Corinthian College agreed to pay $ 6.5 million to settle a lawsuit stating that the chain was involved in unlawful business practices by exaggerating records putting students in jobs with good pay; the amount includes $ 5.8 million in the form of restitution to students as well as $ 500,000 in civil damages and $ 200,000 in court fees.
