History

Music Teachers National Association is an American organization founded in 1876 by Theodore Presser, who is a musician and publisher. MTNA is credited in helping to build an international tone scale in 1883 as well as promoting international copyright law and giving official recognition to American composers. In 1967, MTNA approved a program for qualified teachers. MTNA is also known for its commissioning compositions by American composers and presents the Composer's Annual Composer of the Year Award. The association also holds annual competitions for young musicians at local, state, and national levels. Today, the organization has around 22,000 members, including teachers, players, and composers, and over 500 local affiliates. The official MTNA Journal, American Music Teacher , was first published in 1951.

The purpose of MTNA is to advance the benefits of learning music and music making to the community and to support the professionalism of music teachers. MTNA manages two additional programs: the MTNA Professional Certification Program and the MTNA Foundation Fund. The Professional Certification Program comes to improve the quality of professionalism in applied music teaching and helps the community in identifying proficient music teachers in their community. The MTNA Foundation Fund supports programs that financially help teachers and students with educational goals while providing opportunities for individual and corporate support from MTNA and its programs.

Awards and Special Programs

As an associate music teacher, the mission of MTNA is to improve the professional level and develop the position of all its members. MTNA is responsible for disseminating many publications, including books, journals, and pamphlets that have had a profound impact on the teaching profession of music. MTNA also continuously searches for newly published music and other teaching materials to raise awareness among its members.

Teacher Certification

According to MTNA, "The National Certification Plan is one of the most important for the professional welfare of music teachers, and provides the means to measure and recognize its professional growth, representing almost a century of consultation and deliberation on the part of American music leaders.

Forum MTNA

The independent MTNA music teacher forum was first established in 1972, at the MTNA Convention in Portland, Oregon. After this initial meeting, the IMTF organized various committees at the local and state levels. The aim is "To investigate the role of today's independent full-time teachers in American society: the problems, advantages and practices of this group, with the aim of establishing true professions in this decade."

Many forums now exist through MTNA. They provide an environment for open discussion and expression of ideas. These forums meet annually at the MTNA conference. These forums include:

  • Awareness of Art & amp; Advocacy
  • Collaborative Performance
  • College Faculty
  • Collegiate Column
  • Independent Teachers
  • Local Associations
  • Fitness

First awarded in 1969, the terms of the Award-winning Composer of the Year stated that the association of state music teachers affiliated with MTNA could commission any composers they choose to draw up a work for their state convention. Recording and a number of these works can then be sent to the national headquarters in Cincinnati. Of this commission, one composer is chosen annually by a panel of judges to receive a Distinguished Composer Award, otherwise known as the "Composer of the Year" award.
