The Los Angeles Flower District is a six-block flower market, consisting of nearly 200 wholesale florists, located in LA Fashion District. What started nearly 100 years ago as a small flower market near Santa Monica, California, has grown to become the largest wholesale flower district in the United States in today's downtown location. The market opens very early in the morning, Monday - Saturday, and closes in the afternoon. Any commercially available cut flowers can be purchased there.

History

In the early 1900s, flower farmers in the Los Angeles area drove their horse-drawn carriages into downtown Los Angeles to generate a market to sell their flowers. In 1905, James Vawter, a prominent Santa Monica carnival planter, was founded on Spring Street, the first dedicated flower market. In 1910, local Japanese American farmers (54 Issei, the first generation of Japan) had organized a flower market, which they combined in January 1912. The market came to be known as the Southern California Flower Market and located at 421 Wall Street.

In the next few years, European immigrants, who could not participate in the Japanese-American flower market, began to come together to offer their local flowers for sale to florists and nursery owners. They organized around 1917 and joined in January 1921 as the American Exchange Flower Market dba Los Angeles Flower Market. Their first market was on Winston Street between the Fourth and Fifth streets.

Finally, the two markets moved to a larger place on the 700th block of South Wall Street in Los Angeles, where they operate today as the core of the largest flower district of the country. Since those early days, both markets have evolved and been modernized and organized together as the Los Angeles Flower District. Some storefront businesses on Wall Street and San Julian Street are also included in the District. The district offers "badge programs" for members of florists, event planners and others eligible to purchase goods at wholesale prices which in 2009 included about 4,500 members.

In the 1990s and early 2000s, dozens of malls and small florists came to the city center to do business near the famous and historic Los Angeles Flower District; they consider themselves part of the District. Currently, general stores throughout the region for flowers and flower supply products along with retail and wedding florists and event planners. The district runs from San Pedro Street west to Maple Street, from Seventh Street to south to Ninth Street. But the two major historic markets build a strong foundation of trust and quality through wholesalers who have supplied and delivered fresh flowers to customers across America for nearly 100 years.

The prominent area to see here is the California Flower Mall. The California Flower Mall is in the heart of Los Angeles, Flower District. Inside you will find over 45,000 square feet (4,200 m 2 ) from beautiful fresh cut flowers and potted plants. Over 50 vendors provide flower industry professionals and the general public with exotic flowers from all over the world.
