The Long Beach Unified School District is a school district headquartered in Long Beach, California, United States. Founded in 1885, the Long Beach Unified School District now educates 81,000 students in 84 public schools in the cities of Long Beach, Lakewood, Signal Hill and Avalon on Catalina Island. The school district is the third largest in California and serves one of the most diverse cities in the United States. The student population is 53.1 percent Hispanic, 15.6 percent African American, 15.2 percent white, 11.2 percent Asia, 3 percent multi-race, 1.7 percent Pacific Island and 0.2 percent Native Americans. More than two thirds of the student population comes from low-income households and is eligible for free meals and discounts. The school district employs over 8,000 people, making it the largest company in Long Beach.

In 1993, some parents at LBUSD boundaries enrolled their children in the Los Alamitos Unified School District school day care program so they could then use LBUSD district transfer rules, stating that parents could enroll their children in most schools close to their childcare provider, even if the school is in another school district, to obtain district transfers from the Los Alamitos district and send their children to Los Alamitos schools. LBUSD now has two high schools, Wilson Classic High School, and Millikan Middle School, which also requires school uniforms.
In 1999, Jefferson Leadership Academies became a state junior high school in the United States to convert fully into a single gender class. Only a few dozen more schools are following this trend, mainly because of Title IX of the 1972 Education Act, which prohibits sex discrimination in federally-funded programs. Schools have plans to stop the program after scheduling conflict and disappointing exam scores.
In 2001, there was a movement to form the Lakewood Unified School District. Because students in the city of Lakewood are currently split between four different school districts (Unified ABC School District, Bellflower Unified School District, Paramount Integrated School District and LBUSD), the petition begins. After collecting a number of required petition signatures and LA County reviews, the matter was submitted to the California State Board of Education. The Council rejected the appeal on 8 February 2001 because the council said the proposed district failed to meet four of the nine state criteria for the creation of a new district. Unusual schools
Two Harbors Elementary School, on Two Harbors on Catalina Island, is a one-room school. Registration, (in 2005) were 12 students. The district had planned to close school in the fall of 2005, but residents and visitors of Two Harbors raised enough money to keep the school open.
