History
The "Balboa" gets its name from the coastal Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach, California. People from the Los Angeles area who have seen him start calling it 'The Balboa', or a dance performed at Balboa.
On that day, Balboa Inn is the number one hostelry in Orange County Beach and today the "Balboa Inn Resort" is very popular. The Inn has been renovated and modernized several times but the Spanish Colonial Revival architecture is graciously regulars. At one time the Balboa Theater, operated by colorful, loud-drinking characters, vowed Madame La Rue, standing beside the Balboa Inn.
The Balboa Inn is, and still is, a favorite vacation spot for Hollywood stars. For example, Olympic athletes and Tarzan stars, Johnny Weissmueller, live there. According to legend, Weissmueller swims between Balboa Pier and Newport Pier on a regular basis. The current renowned room at the Inn is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's Suite with a door as high as nine (9) feet.
Balboa dance
The origins of 'Balboa' dance reject consensus. Many dance historians claim that the dance is a derivative of Foxtrot, others believe it evolved from Charleston or the Collegiate Shag. Willie Desatof, the original balboa dancer of the difference, believes it evolved from Rhumba.
There are many different dances around at the time of the introduction of Balboa, and some of the 'master Balboa' knew about them. Balboa is an 8 count dance, so connections with other 8 count dances will be consistent. However, it does not rule out connections to 6 counts of dance. It seems like early Balboa dancers might be influenced by their knowledge of other dances around at the time.
"We can not tell you how to dance Balboa, but we can tell you when you are not dancing Balboa." from Balboa's original dancer.
