Art in education is an expanded field of educational research and practice informed by inquiry to learn through art experience. In this context, art can include performing arts education (dance, drama, music), literature and poetry, storytelling, visual arts education in film, craft, design, digital art, media and photography. It is distinguished from art education by not so much about the art of teaching, but focusing on:

  • how to improve learning through art
  • how to transfer learning in and through art to another discipline
  • discover and create an understanding of human behavior, thought, potential, and learning mainly through close observation of artwork and various forms of engagement in the art experience

The European Commission has funded ART4rom, a project based on the practice of art in school and non-school environments. The aim of the project is to foster intercultural dialogue, mutual understanding and social inclusion for Romans and non-Romans aged between 5 and 10 years.

Weakness

The various models of educational theory are based on Pedagogy while almost completely ignoring the fact that most art schools are directly involved in adult teaching. This blind point means that the pedagogical learning model is not suitable for institutions intended to focus on androgogi which is a term used specifically in relation to the teaching of adult learners.

In places like the United States, art education is not appreciated. However, some national reforms such as the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) require that art, visual and performance education, be regarded as a core subject because they have been proven by many tests to work. Through these requirements schools get funding for implementing subjects and additional items, such as books and calculators, that students may need to be successful. Schools can also earn funds by participating in national and regional standard tests, but these tests only test students on their ability to do high in subjects such as math, literacy, and science. The art course helps students 'ability to perform high in these subjects when they challenge the students' brains. Tests like the Mozart effect, the effect that learning and listening to classical music is in the brain, giving students the ability to learn, reduce stress, and positively change sleep patterns more easily.
