Rivals
The Beach has several rival schools in sports. In addition to being close to each other, Long Beach State and CSUF have been vying heavily as competitor conferences in baseball for more than 20 years. More recently, especially since 2006, Long Beach State and UC Irvine have participated in the annual "Black and Blue Series" Rivalry. In this challenge, each school gets points for a collective conference championship and a win against each other (in all NCAA sports where both schools participate). Total added at the end of the season and the winner is declared. Both schools are currently tied 2-2. Finally, Long Beach State also has an old "beach school" competition with UC Santa Barbara.
Sports club
In addition to the NCAA-approved sports, Long Beach State also has many competitive club sports teams, such as rugby, ice hockey, ultimate, football, crew, skiing, and many others.

Attempts to bring the sport back to the athletic department failed in 2008 when the Referendum Beach Legacy was rejected by the students.
Beach Crew rows at Marine Stadium and Alamitos Bay of Long Beach. The team operates two paid boats from the Pete Archer Rowing Center, which is about 5 blocks south of the CSULB campus.
The team was founded by Bill Lockyer, a local businessman of Long Beach, and Dr. Ludwig Spolyar, a campus activity advisor. Lockyer, trained for over a decade, was replaced by Ed Graham in 1970. Spolyar was appointed to collect students from college who expressed interest in sports. Spolyar became de facto coach in the 1956 season. After a successful run with UCLA and Orange Coast College, the team was officially established next year. The team's first racing shell was donated by Orange Coast College and the first set of paddles by UCLA.
The women's team was formed in 1973 by coach Stephen Buchan and has continued since then.
Beach Crew is a member of the Western Rowing Association (WIRA), whose participants are mostly non-Pac-10 schools on the West Coast. This team is a founding member of the American Collegiate Rowing Association (ACRA), a national college organization whose members are not eligible to compete in the National NCAA Championships or the Family Rowing Championships. The team is currently being trained by Robert Edwards, Jonathan Flietstra, Ian Simpson, and Megan Smith.
