History
The Long Beach Community Hospital was founded in 1924 as a Long Beach Community Hospital with 100 beds and 175 surgeons and doctors on staff. Nine years later, the Long Beach 1933 earthquake shook the hospital but only slightly damaged the hospital. The hospital provides medical care to hundreds of residents after the disaster. In the 1940s, hospitals added new wings, increasing the number of beds to 150.
The 1960s and 1970s saw an increase in the modernization of hospital equipment and facilities with the doubling of emergency room sizes, the opening of intensive care units, the department of nuclear medicine and the coronary care unit. In 1980, the hospital came to power as a Historical Landmark. In the 1980s and 1990s there was a change of ownership. In 1982, HealthWest bought the hospital. Through the 1988 merger, UniHealth became the owner of the hospital, followed by UniHealth hospital purchase in 1998 by Catholic Healthcare West.
During the same period, additional changes and enhancements were made to hospitals including neuropsychiatric centers, neonatal intensive care units, urgent care facilities, and cancer centers. The hospital also received a name change to the Long Beach Community Hospital Medical Center. In 2000, Catholic Healthcare West closed the hospital that triggered a strong reaction from people around the hospital. After 9 months of "Save Our Neighborhood" community effort, the hospital reopened with its current name in 2001.
Since then, the hospital has continued to expand its services by adding 28-bed behavior health units, medical clinics and women's health centers for gynecological surgery services. The hospital received three years of the Joint Commission Accreditation of Accreditation Organization for Health in 2006. The Long Beach Community Hospital became part of MemorialCare Health System in 2011.
In June 2011, the Memorial Health Health System purchased the hospital, preventing it from getting closer. On September 29, 2017, the hospital was renamed the Long Beach Community Medical Center. This continues growth and improvement under the leadership of Long Beach Memorial and Millers Women's and Children's Hospital.
The hospital is scheduled to close by 2018.
