The Goof , officially known as Garden Gate , is a popular restaurant in the Toronto Beach neighborhood. Established in 1952 serves Canadian Chinese cuisine as well as restaurant fare such as breakfast and hamburgers. The nickname comes from a restaurant neon sign. The word "good" is vertical on the sign and the "food" is horizontal, so when at a certain point in its history "d" in "good" burns, it reads "Goo F". Currently near universally referred to as The Goof by the media and locals, while the official name remains Garden Gate.
After almost unchanged for over 50 years, Goof was completely renovated in 2006. The 1950s decor, including the jukebox, was removed and the modernist interior, performed by local designer Bennett Lo, was put in place. The menu remains unchanged, as does the famous sign outside. Another well-known fixture is the waitress Hazel Hoeg, who has been working in the restaurant since the year it opened. The restaurant is currently owned by Raymond Lee and Keith Chau, purchased in the early 1990s.
By 2017 they are updating their web space to include a unique on-line booking application. www.thegoof.menu
The restaurant is also the filming location for two films. Frequency with Dennis Quaid and Angel Eyes with Jennifer Lopez.
The song "Pinch Me" by the Toronto/Scarborough band Barenaked Ladies refers to The Goof with the phrases "there is a restaurant on the street/where hungry people like to eat."
