Among early Spanish settlers was one of California's first families, Lugos. Lugo's land grant covers most of what is now the City of the South Gate.
While Francisco Lugo is stationed in Mission San Antonio de Padua near Salinas, California, his first son in California, Antonio Maria Lugo was born in 1775. His son became Don Antonio Maria Lugo, the Spanish aristocracy and army, who settled on an area of ââ30,000 acres (120 sq km ). 2 ) from the ground covering what is now the City of the South Gate. In 1810, the King of Spain officially gave the land to Lugo as a reward for his father's military service and his father. Rancho San Antonio extends from the low hills that separate it from the San Gabriel Valley to the old Dominguez Farm in the south, and from the eastern border of the Los Angeles pueblo to the San Gabriel River. Lugo also became the mayor of Los Angeles, from 1816 to 1819,
A little over 100 years after Grant's determination of Lugo Land, the area at the southern gate of the farm became the City of the South Gate. When Don Lugo's family grew, he obtained San Bernardino Rancho and other grants under his sons name.
The adjacent and adjacent South Gate site presents a colorful spectacle as many heads of cattle and horses are herded from all directions to a common point for the annual spring rodeo. Lugo will direct the process and resolve disputes over the ownership of contested animals as well as prosecute agricultural disputes. In the saddle, he was the palace and the plain in his courtroom.
Don Antonio's son Vincente (1820-1889) built his batteries in the 1850s on 5.5 hectares (22,000 m 2 ). It is known as Lugo Ranch, and is located on modern Gage Avenue in Bell Gardens Town.

Development
Before the late 1870s, much of the original land grant had been replaced by a 40-acre channel (160,000 m 2 ). By 1880, cattle ranching had been replaced by agriculture as the most important local industry. During the years between 1910 and 1940, most of the farmland was replaced by homes and factories. Early developers accelerated the suburbanization of what was then called South Gate Gardens by dividing the land into small plots and selling empty plots to blue-collar workers. Most early homes are built individually because plot owners use "sweat equity rather than cash to build their own homes" and the local economy relies heavily on urban farming.
Tweedy family
The Tweedy R.D family played an important role in the history of South Gate. Tweedy was born in 1812 in Illinois and came to California with a ox-cart in 1852. Mrs. Tweedy rode across a meadow that perched on her rocking chair on a wagon. The family is great, and several generations have lived in this city. Family members buy about 2,000 hectares (8.1Ã, km 2 ) from the land where most of the Southern Gate is built. The "downtown business district" at the South Gate is named after the family and is known as Tweedy Mile.

During the 1950s, it was the highest GM production facility. The factory was closed in 1982 and is now the location of Southeast SMA in 2005.

Scandal and corruption
From 2001 to 2003, the city's treasurer at that time, Albert Robles, along with three accomplices in the city council, took bribes and in turn gave taxpayer dollars to friends and relatives to do city contracts. Three accomplices form the majority of the five members of the city council, so they can run the city in whatever way they want. For example, in 2002, Robles was arrested on alleged threats of crime but was appointed by the city council for the position of deputy city manager and had his legal bill covered by the city. The city council gave themselves a 2,000% salary increase, and cut the cost of citycar Carmen Avalos by 90%, after he complained about corruption and election fraud in the city to the California State Secretary.
On January 28, 2003, voters summoned Robles along with his political allies, former Mayor Xochitl Ruvalcaba, former Deputy Mayor Raul Moriel, and former city councilor Maria Benavides.
Robles was convicted of bribery in July 2005. In November 2006 he was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison, ordered to pay the South Gate city $ 639,000 in damages, and was immediately arrested.
In March 2006, Rudy Navarro, who was elected to replace Albert Robles as city treasurer, was caught making false statements on his biography posted on the city's official website. He claims that he got a degree from San Diego State University, when he actually has not completed all the requirements.
The recent political history of the South Gate has been marked by political observers and editors as having elements of Third World Politics.
