Jon Kabat-Zinn (born Jon Kabat , June 5, 1944) is an American medical professor and creator of the Clinical Reduction Clinic and Center for Caution in Medicine, Health Care and Society at the School of Medicine University of Massachusetts. Kabat-Zinn is a student of Buddhist teachers such as Thich Nhat Hanh and Zen Master Seung Sahn and founding members of Cambridge Zen Center. The practice of yoga and his study with the Buddhist teachers led him to integrate their teachings with scientific findings. He teaches attention, which he says can help people cope with stress, anxiety, pain, and illness. The stress-reduction program made by Kabat-Zinn, mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), is offered by medical centers, hospitals, and health care organizations.

Live and work
Kabat-Zinn was born in New York City in 1944 as the youngest of nine children, Elvin Kabat, a biomedical scientist, and Sally Kabat, a painter. He graduated from Haverford College in 1964 and went on to earn a Ph.D. in molecular biology in 1971 from MIT, where he studied under Salvador Luria, Nobel Laureate in medicine.
While at MIT, Kabat-Zinn is a leading campaigner against military research at the university as well as a campaigner against the Vietnam war. During this time, he contemplated his purpose in life, which he called "karmic assignment."
Career
Kabat-Zinn was first introduced for meditation by Philip Kapleau, a Zen missionary who came to speak at MIT where Kabat-Zinn was a student. Kabat-Zinn goes on to learn meditation with other Buddhist teachers such as ThÃÆ'ch Nh? T H? Nh and Seungsahn. He also studied at the Insight Meditation Society and eventually taught there. In 1979, he founded the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where he adapted Buddhist teachings on awareness and developed the Program for Stress and Relaxation Reduction. He later renamed the eight-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program. He removed the Buddhist framework and ultimately understated any relationship between Buddhist consciousness and Buddhism, rather than placing the MBSR in a scientific context. He then also established the Center for Attention in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. His secular technique, which combines meditation and Hatha yoga, has spread throughout the world. This course aims to help patients cope with stress, pain, and illness using the so-called "moment-to-moment awareness."
MBSR Kabat-Zinn is beginning to get an increased notice with the publication of his first book, Full of Life Disaster: Using Your Body's Wisdom and Your Thoughts for Stress, Pain, and Illness (Delta, 1991), which gives detailed instructions for this exercise. Then, in 1993, his work on the Stress Reduction Clinic was featured in Bill Moyers' special PBS Healing and Mind , spurring wide interest in MBSR and helping to make Kabat-Zinn nationally renown. In 1994, the second book of Kabat-Zinn, titled Wherever You Go, Where You Are , became a national bestseller. In the late 1990s, many MBSR clinics were opened, either as stand-alone centers or as part of a hospital holistic treatment program.
Research by Kabat-Zinn includes the effects of MBSR on psoriasis, pain, anxiety, brain function, and immune function.
He is a board member of the Mind and Life Institute, a group that organizes dialogue between the Dalai Lama and Western scholars.
MBSR has been adapted for use by the US military to improve the "operational effectiveness" of combatants, apparently with Kabat-Zinn's approval, which has provoked some controversy among mindfulness practitioners.
Discussing the integration of narration into the practice of consciousness, Kabat-Zinn has said, " map... can close... the territory. '
Kabat-Zinn is Professor of Emeritus Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Personal life
Kabat-Zinn is married to Myla Zinn, Roslyn's daughter and Howard Zinn. They have three grown children.
Kabat-Zinn grew up in a Jewish family that did not practice. He has stated that his growing belief is a blend of science and art. Although he has been "trained in Buddhism and supports his principles," he rejects the "Buddhist" label, preferring to "apply attention in a scientific framework rather than a religion."
